Really fat necks for tele- Which one?

Dear Forumites,

I'm about to build a Tele. Since I like big, chunky necks, I'm interested in your opinion.
I played a Strat with an Allparts SMO-Fat neck which I liked, but I'd like it even bigger (or with bigger shoulders).
I've read about musikraft and UsaCG necks.

So, my question:
Which one from these have the biggest, fullest profile?

By the way: I've seen on the Musikraft webpage, that the Chunky 1" neck is available with D and C profile.
Has anyone tried them?

Any input of yours will be appreciated.

The SMO-FAT (and TMO-FAT) are very, very similar to USACG's fatback profile, which is 1" thick. I have both. I honestly couldn't imagine much more shoulder and still making it rounded at all. I haven't seen anything bigger than these.

Maybe you'd be happier with that fatback profile and a 1 11/16" nut?

I have a Warmoth neck, wide with fatback profile. Having large hands it suits me fine.

I've got the TMO Fat on a partscaster.
Its plenty beefy. Everybody that picks it up first thing they day is "dang thats a big neck!"
Feels about like my Martin, if not bigger.

If you are in Budapest, you can check out the store Vintage52, they have a few built teles, one of them is this one with an Allparts TMO-Fat. Don't know whether it differs from its strat counterpart or not. It is a big neck, fer sure.

They also have this with another Allparts V neck.

I'm waiting for some other forum members to see this thread. I remember one member had a guitar that was closer to 1.25" profile at the nut.

I think if you ask Warmoth or USACG, they'll do it for you.

Have you thought about the nut width?

Daniel, a lot of folks who use TMO, SMO, SRO and now TRO-FAT necks like to slim them down prior to finishing them. It is possible that SMO was worked already. This is what Lindy Fralin does, for example.

One of the things that makes these Allparts necks seem smaller is the nut width is right at 1 + 5/8ths and this is narrower than almost all Fender necks.
A Warmoth FAT neck with a 1 + 11/16ths (actually, more) seems bigger because it is much wider, IMO. And their "1 + 5/8ths" is more like 1.643 or so.

But I'd go with USACG. They can make you a 1.75 nut width, with whatever profile you like. I've done a bunch of 1.72 wide USACG necks and I think it is great.

I haven't thought about the width yet, that seems to be an important factor, too.

I have a Warmoth Fatback with a 1 3/4'' nut. I have LOOOOOONG fingers. I had it made with Bubinga for the neck and Pau Ferro for the fretboard. Just dont get tall frets, unless you are OK with reverse shimming your neck to get the right clearance. It was kind of a pain but its doable. Great neck.

as mentioned already - any of the FAT fender japan necks that are sold via allparts.com are superb. they're all the same 1" thick at the 1st fret fat profile, only the headstock shape changes, nitro finishing (NF) is optional as well. i the xRO-FAT necks pretty much exclusively for my personal teles and strats.

+1 for those Allparts fatties. I buy them unfinished, bolt them to the guitar, string her up, and gradually sand the profile here and there to my exact liking. I sand, play, sand, play until it's perfect. Then I remove the neck and do the finishing, which for me is Danish or tung oil.

I always get the rosewood ones just because with an oil finish I find it easier to just worry about finishing the back of the neck and headstock, without having to do the fingerboard.

I have a Fralin Allparts neck. I can only compare it to a Baja and Nocaster that I played briefly. I think the Fralin is rounder than those. His description says something about a slight V, but TBH I don't get that. Nice neck, though.

the neck/fingerboard had NOTHING to do with "tone" and everything to do with "feel" - pick the one that makes you happiest.

i stay away from maple fingerboards as any non-maple board is easier to maintain with regards to refrets and L&C's, and since maple boards need to be sprayed for best finish results, a non-maple board only requires neck sealing/finishing that can be well done with any wipe on clear (prestain is an option).
