Need help! wiring problems possibly
Hello friends. I'm new posting but I've been reading your forum since last november. My name is Carlos and I live in El Salvador
I bought a "FrankenTele" from eBay real cheap. A real mess LOL I have made several adjustments thanks to many of your posts. Thanks for that. However there is one thing I could not find a solution to and decided to post it. When the switch is set on the neck position or the bridge position, the pickups sound great. But when in the middle/center position the volume decreases considerably and sounds like coming out of a megaphone. Here's a pic of the wiring: ![]() Just to give you an idea of what is in this guitar, this is a fragment of the eBay description. Quote:

Welcome, and congratulations on your new Telecaster!
I'd bet your humbucker is out of phase with your single coil pickup, in fact you described it perfectly. Trace the wires coming from the humbucker, one will be soldered to the back of one of the pots, and the other is soldered to a lug on the switch. Desolder them and reverse the wires, and resolder them. For example, if the black wire goes to the back of the pot, and the white one goes to the switch now, you will solder the black one to the switch, and the white one to the pot. Good luck!

UPDATE*** Oh God there is a whole mess in there. There is one green wire coming from the humbucker I finally found out that wire comes out as Gray on the plate rout. But there are other wires connected to that wire too and I only can only assume it is the bridge pickup wires. It is so confusing I'm thinking desolder everything and starting from scratch. But that would be my first time doing that and I'm afraid to make things worse. I'll do what looks logical and try that. Thanks for helping me out Last edited by chill75; July 23rd, 2012 at 10:51 PM. |

As long as you plan on rewiring you may want to consider replacing that switch with a better rotary switch like those that come stock on the higher end guitars. It's only about a $15 part and you wouldn't need to worry about that one going to pot.
dsuttons advice is correct though. You have a pickup wired in reverse so you're getting an out or phase response when you use both. Simply reverse the ground and hot leads for that pickup and you should be good to go.

But I noticed the out of phase problem persisted. So I finally did what you guys told me (solder the black where the white was and v-versa) and it worked. Thanks again!! |
