Tuners for American Vintage '69

Hey guys,

Lurked on this forum for awhile, but first time posting.

I have had a 2011 American Vintage '69 for about 3 months, bought it used and it's become my main gigging axe. It's an amazing guitar. Needed some nut work and a good set up, but i've been really happy overall.

That being said, I've had one main issue: The tuners are awful. I don't know if I got a bad set, or they are all like this. The tension is awful; strong and not remotely smooth and i believe they are negatively affecting my intonation with how they jump all over the place. I don't mind a little tension, but this is borderline ridiculous.

the Fender site calls them "F" style tuners. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a recommendation for improving them? If not, perhaps a good replacement that stays in the with vintage look? (link: http://www.fender.com/products/searc...tno=0100052805 )

Thanks for the help!

Those are the diagonal tuners I had on my vintage tele when I bought it new in 1968.

A couple got banged-out on the road and I thought they were cheap and tinny so replaced them with 6 inline Schallers way back. Made the neck a bit heavier but was worth it.

Those F tuners sucked then and probably now also - real junk...agreed.

I think Schaller or a different company makes a diagonal higher-quality replacement sold online through a major supplier but don't remember details.

Allparts have Economy, Gotoh and Schaller diagonal mount tuners but they are not splits.
The Gotoh are poor quality in my experience.

I think those are the originals on my '73, they work good enough but look really cool in an old tarnished sort of way.
