No matter how careful you were the edges are bound to have at least a few chips that would show up.

That's not a project I would be willing to tackle.

No. The cutting of the channel for the binding would inevitably chip the finish.

There is a Ron Kirn thread where he builds a tele start to finish, and his process was to route the channel after the nitro color coats were sprayed, but before the top coats. He did not have chipping on the color coats, but this would also be on fresh nitro, and could be a little softer than cured nitro/poly.

The only sure way to know would be to test your process out on something very similar. You'd have to experiment with the tools and conditions you are working with.

I added binding to a PRS SE. No way I can see to do it without at least finish repairs. The catalyzed polyester finish on most imports will chip like crazy when you go cutting on it.
Plus, your binding will be unfinished. At the very least, you'd have to clearcoat it.

despite what I did when I was young and impetuous..... don't try it....

since you're here asking.... that's pretty indicative that you don't know how... 'cause if you DID know how, you would know ya don't know how... and knowin' what ya can't do is important, only if ya know enough not to do it...

Or too see what it will look like when you get through, well not through, but when you finally give up.... take some paint and a paint brush and, free hand, paint some binding on there, trying to make it look original, and do it while you have wet glue all over your hands.... also put some glue on the sticky side of the tape you would use to hold the binding down and stick it to the guitar exactly where you would least likely want a major mess.

That will come pretty close to that your binding job will look like, only the paint and glue fingerprints will actually be neater.

Ron

I'm sure it is possible somehow, but I wouldn't recommend it. The only way I know to absolutely prevent chipping the finish would be to score the finish exactly where the binding will stop. Not a task I think many would enjoy.

I'm sure it is easier/less work to just re-finish.

Thanks for the responses. The reason this even came about I showed a friend a telecaster for sell on ebay.http://www.ebay.com/itm/FENDER-50s-T...item43aee564e3. It spurred weather or not it could be added to a lower priced Telecaster. I like to look it adds to the telecaster ,but you never see it on cheaper models. If I come across one and have the money it will be mine. OH yes it will be mine

Ron thanks for the response. I wouldn't dare take on this challenge. Plus I don't have the shop set up to such a prodject. If I did I'd practice on 2x4's before a body, but I hope to have a telecaster with binding one day.

I have a tele I built a few years ago, that I decided afterward needed some binding.
The top is trans green. And the back & sides are rosewood. And the whole thing is finished with a satin poly finish.
Since I don't care for the way it looks without the binding and I don't have much money tied up in this one I'm gonna take a shot at it when i have the time.
I'm sure I'll have to do some touch up work when I'm done. But I don't think it'll be much.

Sage advice. I've been trying to read most of Ron's posts, trying to suck up as much info from him as possible (thank you Ron for your posts). It's interesting to see how techniques will change over the years. Hearing what he has to say about sticky fingers, etc, it seems experience has taught better new practices.

I was not making a comment on the op asking a question....I was only saying Ron's comment was a gem... that could be applied to many questions.
