Lace Sensor Hot Gold Variations

Just an FYI.

I recently purchased 2 Hot Gold Lace Sensors off ebay & they look significantly different. One has a smooth, glossy surface & the other has a textured, matte finish. One is potted & the other is not. I contacted Lace & they confirmed that there are indeed different versions.

Here's part of the response:

Quote:
Though out the years, we have made a few cosmetic modifications. The matte finish is the newer of the pickups. ... Again, for a short time we experimented with potting the pickups, but found it made no difference in the tone, and only added weight to the guitar. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me again.

Cheers,

Reggie Ashley

I have several Lace Sensors (silver and blue) and they only have two leads. Both only have the white and orange leads not the green.

They do say "Fender" Lace Sensors, were they different? Or are these just older models?

What does the green lead do? After looking at yours, mine are not potted.

The Green wires are ground wires. You can see in the picture that the Green wire is just soldered to the frame of the pickup.

How old are your Lace pups? I have a set that came out of my '94 Strat and they have the Green ground wires.

I really don't have any idea just how old they are. I got them from a friend in a trade deal on a Tele.

He had them in that guitar probably from the 80's/ early 90's possibly. I really don't know for sure.

I see the green wire soldered to the frame now. I put them in a Strat that I have and have not had any grounding problems with them. They're very quiet.
