'68 bridge pickup info?

Does anyone know (or have a photo of) what was used to wrap the winding on a '68 bridge pickup?

Mine is wrapped in some kind of material that looks like an Ace-bandage; I wonder if that is original?

I am considering potting this pickup because it is extremely microphonic and feeds back if you even look at it crossways. But I'm wondering if I should remove the wrap or not before dunking in wax.

Originally white cloth string, which may look black after years of grit and grime and/or being potted.
