Ashtray for MIM tele

I searched the forum to an answer to this, but no luck.

Does Fender make an ashtray cover for MIM teles? I just bought my first, a 2006 candy apple red, all stock, for $250 ;o) I'd like to jazz it up by covering the bridge, making it look really classy (well, as classy as a Mexican can anyway!)

Ashtray threads are almost as bad as relic threads.

The short answer is, if your bridge lays flat rather than sticks up in a box shape then no.

There isnt anything for the ashtray to connect to.

A stock Standard Tele has the modern style bridge. The ashtray cover only works with the vintage style bridge.

So you'll have to buy a vintage bridge first.

You can do a straight swap to a vintage style bridge on an MIM Standard (I have), and slip a cover on it.

Assuming you have a Standard, you can easily install a Fender brand vintage 3 barrel bridge. They're the only vintage style bridges that reliably accept a factory style cover. Talking about bridges from AV52s and 62s, MIM Reissue '69 Thinlines, or MIM Classic 50s or 60s Teles (or 50s Esquires). I don't find the aftermarket bridge plates from Stew Mac or Allparts or Glendale or Callaham or Wilkinson readily hold an ashtray cover.

I have no problems with a Highway One bridge holding a cover either.

Ditto. Vintage bridge swap is cheap, and doesn't take that long. As far as bridge cover, while it looks cool, i find it harder to play. Won't know until you try it.

Fender ashtray cover £17 (scroll down fourth from bottom)

There again, the modern tele bridge does intonate better then the vintage bridge.
Do they sound different? - yes.
Does the vintage bridge sound better? - no.
- Checkout uTube clip of Pete Townshend's Magic Bus on "Later" - 1952 tele with retro-fitted modern flat 6-saddle bridge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxZ77w9bnm8
If it ain't bust, don't fix it.

wow! thanks everyone. it's just a plain vanilla MIM standard. the bridge is flat, so I'd have to switch out to a vintage style bridge. having heard that intonation is a Bee-yatch on the 3 saddlers, I think I'll just keep what I got.

Its not.

I was messing with the ashtray that came with my 52RI, and it falls off of that guitar but fits nice and snug on my Squier CVC bridge which is slightly thicker. (and better constucted-no indents/machine marks)

where in Portsmouth are you? Im in VB...
