Where do you buy your Electronic Parts for your MODs and Repairs?
Just a little surveyish question. I hear so many different ways and places that people buy parts such as Tone Caps to Volume pots etc... Where do you turn and why?

Might there be any local type stores beside the Shack... Just for options? I am a spur of the moment kind of guy, I like to tear into my toys and go find what I need to fix them so that I can A-D-D out and move on... I live in an area of about 250 thousand. So not a city but not Mayberry either.

I buy most items in bulk since I use them for customers & resell, so my sources vary a little bit based on which vendor has what I need at the best price when I'm ordering, but here's where I usually go:
SAE-sized pots, switches, jacks: Allparts Metric-sized pots, switches, jacks: WD Music Caps: Mouser PVC coated wire: Mouser Cloth wire: Allparts Radio Shack is good for miscellaneous items, especially if I need just one or two odd things and need 'em now. The mini-toggles appear to be about the same quality as more expensive items from guitar specialty places. They're probably the same Asian manufacturer. Interestingly, 1/4" Switchcraft jacks are cheaper for me from Allparts than they are from Mouser. Not exactly comparing apples and apples, since I'm paying AP's dealer price and Mouser's standard price (not even sure if they offer reseller accounts), but it really surprised me that I paid more for a standard electrical item at an electronics supplier than I do at a guitar parts supplier. In the electronics world, these things are like nails are to a carpenter, while in the guitar world they're a specialized part. |
