Mojo Tone Vitamin T .047uF cap

I was ready to order a coupla orange drops from Guitar Parts Resource, but I found them for half the price at Vintage Sound. And then I saw the Mojo Tone Vitamin T ones for almost $5. Well, am I a sucker for paying the extra $3 or so? They look really cool!

I change strings about once a year. Once I get the wiring how I like it, I won't be changing it. It looks like that's 1 fer a buck 49, and I coulda got Orange Drops for that. A lot of people swear by those. But there are those who say it doesn't make any difference what type of cap you use (except for tolerance variations). The only way for me to know is to try it myself. I once paid $50 for a pair of unused 1950's wax paper caps. I was never certain if it sounded different or not, but I liked knowing it was in there. I figure $5 is a cheaper experiment. And besides, like I said, they look cool!

[QUOTE=sjtalon;3073413]Save your money for good strings:

You do have a good point. With my year-old strings, 15-yr old cables and distortion pedal (and whatever else I can get my hands on), and by the time my signal goes thru my old Marshall with failing capacitors and tubes, that little cap in my guitar aint gonna amount to spit!

I'm a little eccentric. I don't put anything cheap in my guitars.

In that case, I have some 0.022µF 50V 10% metal film capacitors for sale that have been hand selected, tested and verified, pre-tinned leads for $30/each.

Let me know how many you want.

Eh, it was worth a shot.

I bet though, that if I took some cheap tube caps, molded them inside black plastic and painted some bumblebee stripes on them I could probably sell them for $100+ a pair.

Oh that's right - Gibson beat me to it.

I have the same question on best sounding capacitors. Yesterday, I decided to put the old capacitor back into my 1964 Tele. It was not original I'm sure but had been in there since 1978. It was a big orange Astron, .047 uF, 400v cap. The one that was in there for the past 10 years was a small ceramic disc, I assume the .05 uF called for in the schematic. I may have noticed a small difference in tone. It seems like my tone control has a little more frequency sweep to it (almost a wah-wah effect) but it is so slight, it could be my imagination. Are there any holy grail caps out there or is it just a big waste of time, money and effort?

It obviously seems to be a matter of circumspection, but I believe there are subtle differences. If I "think" I can feel a difference, then it matters. It's all about "vibe" to me. I could plug my guitar into a First Act amp from Costco, and play some cool riffs, and nobody is going to think the reason that piece of cr*p amp sounds good must be 'cuz I have some really good electrical components or cloth-covered wire or whatever. It's 'cuz I can plaaaaayyyyy!

And part of playing electric guitar is being able to make adjustments to bring out the tone that will inspire one to play his or her "good stuff."

I think its awesome that gibson doesn't even think there's a difference. They charge a 22,000 precent markup for some plastic and paint. I bet marketing laughs themselves to sleep everytime somebody buys a set.

I split the difference. I just buy these, wherever I find them cheapest.

I have a Strat that would welcome those components, Fezz. Will you take 30 bucks?

Isn't it though? There must be people who would pay 10x that... I'm led to believe by the adds I see on EBay.
