noise from noiseless pickups
I purchased two dimarzio area 58s and one area 61.
When I first installed them I didn't really do anything to the 250k volume and tone pots and cap that were there. I just replaced the pickups. They sounded great and they were noiseless. After hearing some players that enjoy 500k volume and tone pots I decided to change the pots. Now it's humming like mad. It stops a good bit when I touch the strings so I thought it would be a ground problem. But, I have looked at and rewired this strat about 10 times and nothing changes. I installed my 250k pots back in and its humming still. This is the wiring diagram I'm using http://support.fender.com/diagrams/s...100102BPg2.pdf Only thing different is I have the middle pickup open without a tone control. (Instead of the bridge) I used some cheap speaker wire to replace some short wire. I'm wondering if that is causing a lot of the noise? thanks guys |

ok so i replaced all the wires and elevated the pots off of the foil shielding a bit, the noise is gone.
but for some reason my bridge tone pot does nothing, and my volume and neck tone pot are BOTH acting like a tone pot. any tips? i wired it exactly to that diagrahm |

The original humming could have been a bad ground connection from a cold solder joint. This time who knows. You might want to re-melt each of your solder joints to make sure they're all good connections.

The cap is not directional. But you might have wired it to the wrong lug. I've done that, especially when tired or frustrated or frantic.
Take it slow and start over. Nothing's broken. Your original problem sounds like a ground failure. Don't forget to double-check that hot and ground are wired to the correct lugs on the output jack. I find Deaf Eddie's diagrams much easier to follow than the diagram you linked. Find them at: http://deaf-eddie.net/ His stock Strat diagram: http://deaf-eddie.net/drawings/strat-1.jpg |
