Shellac for body/neck help!
Hiya all,
I want to produce a "butterscotch blonde" (body) and a "vintage tint" (neck) finish. I only have those finishing materials (because I can't order flammable stuff overseas): - Platina Shellac (Non-tinted) - White Liquid Pigment (Opaque) - Yellow, Red, Medium Brown Liquid Stains (Tints) For the body, I want to feel the grain of the wood (thin skin), but also I want a translucent color (%50 visible grains just like a classic blonde). But I don't know how to make that translucent look with that white pigment. By spraying a light coat? And which will give the best result: Spraying or brushing? The neck will be a vintage tint finish, but with more orange. Stewmac told me to not mix those tints with the shellac. So I guess I have to apply them seperately. 1. First coat of shellac 2. White pigment 3. Shellac again 4. Yellow, red and brown mixture stains 5. Last coat of shellac Is it right? Please correct me if I'm wrong and give me a good receipe to accomplish that finishing job (for both body and neck). Here is my guitar: Natural yellowish body finish and a pale neck. ![]() I want it same as the one at the bottom:

Are there any stores that carry the Bullseye Amber Shellac that we get in the states? Might be worth investigating.
That would be all you need to tint your neck to match the guitar in the pic. Unfortunately I have no experience with the tints. I am surprised they can't be mixed with the Shellac though. Probably the best thing you can do is practice on a scape piece of Maple. I have several lying around just to experiment with. |

You can mix it, but can't get good results I guess... Whats bullseye shellac? Stewmac sells caramel amber shellac, but its too yellow (not orange. Maybe its possible to tint the neck with yellow, red and brown aniline mixture, then use a shellac. Is it possible?

I mix transtint ( samething as SM colortone tint) with shellac all the time with good results.
But the pigment is made specifically for acetone based or water based lacquer, so I don't know about that.
