String Snapping

As embarrasing as it appears, I have broken several strings with my new Custom Deluxe Custom Shop Tele. This tele has the locking tuners, and I am perplexed as to why this is happening. Firstly, I have to say that when I tune the guitar, I loosen up the retaining knob before I start to adjust for tuning. This is when I have seen strings "snap" There is probably a reasonable explanation for this, but it won't come from me. Perhaps there are many of you out there whom could shed some light on how to deal with this circumstance? Thanks!

If the string is breaking up by the tuner it is because when you initially tighten down the retaining knob on the tuner it puts a dent in the string. Then when you release the lock the string probaly moves out slightly..this leaves a weak spot in the string causing it to snap. You should not have to loosen the retaining knob to tune the strings. i usually get about a 1/2-3/4 of a string wind around the locking tuner when I initially tighten it. Should be plenty to retune without loosening.

Sounds like you are under the mistaken assumption that tightening the locking wheel in back keeps the tuner from turning.
What it does is lock the string in the hole. Just run the string through the hole in the tuner post, tighten the wheel and then tune normally.

Flynman is right. Loosening that wheel (retaining knob) is causing your problem. You only loosen it to change strings.

Tuners

Macatt & Flynman, thank you both very much! This explanation sounds very reasonable, and I can tell you both that my perception was to loosen the tuner each time I tuned the guitar. Now I won't have to continue doing this, and the futility & embarrassment stops right here.

You should only be embarrassed if you did not ask the question. If there's a problem with a guitar, somebody here will know the answer. This is the best forum on the Web!! Good luck with your new Axe.

Here she is! I'm happy to say that this body resonates wonderfully even without amplification.
