Changing vintage tuners, removing washers/collars is a struggle

So I built a '52 Tele and all my hardware is shiny and new EXCEPT the tuners. The tuners came with the neck and are significantly tarnished. This wouldn't bother me so much if they weren't offsett by the shiny new bridge and control plate. I have new tuners but am having a tough time removing the washers (or collars, or ferulles) that seat into the face of the headstock. I don't want to get too rough in removing them and I wondered if anyone here had a trick I should know about; hopefully someone can help. Thanks.

Heat 'em up with a soldering iron. You can use a dowel to push them out from the back side.

Tap them out from the rear with a proper size drift of either wood or metal.

another option is to leave the original bushings in place and just change the tuners.
