Making a New Nut

I am going to shim the neck of my 71 Tele and also make a new nut. I have never made a nut before so if any of you have advice I'd appreciate it.
I was thinking of using bone or ivory........are they of equal quality or is one better for some reason?
I'm a sculptor,so I have all the tools and skills.
I'm a nut at heart,so I figure I have an intuitive head start.
Please tell me what you know.

Thanks, NewMercies
