Grounding pickguard

Just wondering about grounding a plastic pickguard to eliminate static buildup and the resulting 'scratching' noise whenever you touch it.

What's the best way to go about this? Can I, for example, just mount a wire using electrical tape? Or will a small piece of self-adhering copper foil with wire attached do it? Or do I need a copper shield for the whole guard?

Thanks

You can't really....ground plastic. You ground conductors, not insulators.

Well the pickguard is obviously becoming statically charged - so there has to be some way to dissipate the static electricity.

Not wanting to rub my guitar with a dryer sheet for the rest of my life - I have done a little research and shielding seems to help for some folks.

I've used copper self-adhesive foil. Covered the entire pickguard and then ran a very small wire from a pickguard screw hole (making sure it touches the copper foil also) to common ground.
