What's a good nitro white primer besides RR?
I've purchased many cans of paint from Reranch but would like to use a different less expensive white primer, although I like the coverage of RR primer. Any good nitro alternatives out there?
I've used Bin's from Home Depot before but that didn't cover very well and I'm not sure that's nitro or not? |

I use clear Deft nitro lacquer in the quart cans, thinned a little and shot through a Preval sprayer. For white I add universal white pigment. This allows you to control your ratio of pigment to lacquer, thin for see through, more pigment for opaque. Tintsall makes good universal pigments that can be put in any medium. Unfortunately, they do not make a white, so I have my local hardware store shoot out some of the white pigment from their paint mixing machine into a jar.

Thanks for all the responses, muchos gracias!! I've used the Bins, and it works but doesn't go on like the reranch with that high solids content, but I guess just spray more right.
So, I have been doing relic bodies (Teles/Strats) for fun, and my process is simple: A prepped USACG body, sanded to 320, I seal using Behlen's Sand/Sealer from Rockler, sand that back a few times, generally uses about a can to provide and excellent filled surface on the ash bodies I get from USACG. Then I simply hit it with Reranch primer, then the color coat, then start laying on the clear coats, let dry for two months. I use Deft clear or Behlen's Master Top Coat Lacquer, or reranch. The Behlen's drys really fast and hard, great for chipping/checking/steel wool treatment, wet sanding etc, after a month or so. Now I'm thinking of painting airbrush designs on prepped bodies in the same way but the airbrush paints are water based automotive paints from Auto Air. I've read some people use these water based paints to lay down a design and then clear coat over the top with nitro and it works fine. Most of these artists usually put a design over an already finished guitar, probably most of them are poly finished that they just hit with primer. I wonder what kind of primer they use, and I would be prepping my bodies with the usual nitro sand/sealer/ and white primer either reranch or Bins etc. Do you think that would work with the water based airbrush paints? |
