String dampener?
I need a string dampener for playing slide, but I'm not really sure how they work. I just know I need one because the noise from the strings I'm NOT playing is terrible. Not that I know how to play slide yet.
Would someone mind explaining how to put a dampener on my Tele and what's the proper dampener to use.

The best "dampener" is one of your fingers behind the slide.
I'm not being facetious; that's the truth. It takes a while, but you'll get the hang of it.

3" length of wire
Thickness depends on string height, with insulation of course. I used to slide it down to just next to the nut, but I found that the sound was too muffled and stopped using it. Just fingers is enough and gives you a better touch.
