stumped by flush-mount jack

Hi,

I have a recessed jack on my G&L ASAT Special that a friend messed up. He stepped on the cord in the midst of some sort of *****in' solo and (from what I can tell) bent the contacts on the inside of the jack. The jack works intermittently, and cuts out when you tweak the cord one way or another. I can't figure out how to take it apart and repair it.

It looks something like this:

How would I get a tool deep enough inside the output jack cavity to turn the nut? A deep socket set? Doesn't seem like it would fit in the control cavity, though.

The worst part? It's been in this condition since 1999!

Um, I do all my own work, have for years. What's a tech going to do that I can't? I think it's obvious I'm just missing some crucial approach to problem. Yes, I feel like an idiot.

Good for you. I feel the same way. I don't think there's any repairing that type of jack. Just buy a new one. Now the problem of removing the old one. I don't think it can be done without destroying the old one. Here a pictorial on ASAT jack replacement thanks to Ken Baker on the G&L forum.

Jack, I have so much respect and admiration for you. You've helped me out of a few jams like this in the past (some just passively, but some were direct responses to my questions).

I especially loved how you had a link to the exact solution, and I mean exact! It actually made me chuckle. Thanks for doing what you do.

It is weird. I feel that G + L has given away hundreds of possible sales because people lack confidence in that strange design. They should just bite the bullet and get rid of it. The fact that I've had no issues personally with this jack design changes nothing.

Dr. Jack to the rescue, again!

Frank Ford made a tool that might help with removing one of those jacks (or maybe not, I'm not sure how tightly mounted they are in the body):

In any event, it's a cool tool.
