Flush mounting Ferrules

Anyone got any hints on how to cut the 3/8" dia step for the ferrules. I have warmoth body with the 5/16" straight holes drilled but want to flush mount rather than surface mount.
thanks
Jeff

Have you tried Callaham?

Jeff

Have a look at the Callaham site (http://www.callahamguitars.com). One of thr easiest ways to achieve flush ferrules is to use their 3/8th diameter ferrules and bore the whole of the hole to 3/8ths.

Just a thought.

Peter

If you check Callaham's website, you'll see that he will custom-make whatever diameter ferrule you desire on order...

Barring that, you can counterbore them yourself if you have a drill press -- and (VERY IMPORTANT) the holes aren't too deep.

Plug the ferrule hole with a 5/16" dowel cut to lenght. Tale a 3/8" brad point drill bit and drill 1/8" deep into the center of the dowel. Next, take a small drill bit and poke the dowel out from the front through the string holes.

You'll now have a counterbored hole just like Fender uses, although it's easier to do if you drill the 3/8" recess first.

If you want to go with the flush ferrules, you can still plug the hole with a dowel and use the 3/8" brad point drill to drill the entire length of the ferrule out.

Stew Mac also sells the flush ferrules, which is where I get them.

If you want to see a tutorial on drilling these things, click my WWW link below, select the black double-bound guitar, and then choose "Rear String Ferrules" from the menu at the bottom of the page.

Any idea on the cost of filling the holes and redrilling for the flush mount ferrules? I don't have a drill press, and if I did, I still wouldn't do it.....

I also have a Warmoth body and didn't realize until too late the ferrules were gonna stick out.

Just wait until you try to mount an output jack to the round body edge, if this bothers you... :)
I stared at my electro socket for about 10 minutes yesterday, scratching my head, until the light came on.

"Well, it fit the Fender...."

The reason for plugging the existing ferrule is really just to provide some resistance to the drill bit when drilling them out -- kind of keep it on-center, y'know?

I have no idea what a "luthier" would charge to redo your holes. Too much, I'm sure. I'd do it for nothing, if you were around here, but that doesn't help you much.
