Where have all the Schallers gone?
So, I decided I want to put Fender/Schaller locking tuners on my new Tele. It's got the non-locking Ping tuners with the two hidden pins. The Fender/Schaller lockers should drop right in. The problem is, everybody is out of stock on the shiny chrome ones. I emailed Steve at Angela.com, to see if he knew when they would be back in stock. Steve emailed me back to say that they were back in stock, but when I checked, the website says they are Ping tuners. I don't think they would be much of an improvement from the Ping's that I've got now. Question is, are the Schallers no more? Are they all going to be replaced by Fender/Ping tuners?

Schaller has suffered from family squabbling and has dropped the ball on production. I wouldn't expect for see Schaller made Fender lockers any time soon. |

You will definitely finder Schaller or Fender Schaller 6-inline rear locking tuners - but you won't find Schaller 3x3 rear lockers until their (Schaller) Asian production gets stoked up and running. Too bad, Schaller rear lockers are about the best, with Planet Waves a close second.

The Ping version of the chrome plated have the "F" on the locking knob. The brushed chrome are hard tell from the Schallers unless you can look at them closely. Some of the techs at Fender have told me that they feel the Pings are better made, to tighter tolerances. I haven't had a chance to compare for myself. "You will definitely finder Schaller or Fender Schaller 6-inline rear locking tuners" Rob, if you know of any sources that still have the actual Schaller, made in Germany, Fender lockers in stock, please tell us who they are. |

Thanks I don't know if one is better than the other or not. I do object to a website adverting a product they know they don't have. No excuses for this. |

I have a telecaster MIM and was looking for the same chrome shaller locking tuners. Everybody was out. MusiciansFriend showed them on backorder through 2-9-08. I couple of weeks ago I saw that they were in stock so I ordered them. They came in a Fender package but said "Made in Taiwan" on the back of the package. There description said nothing about them being staggered but when I received the package 4 were of one height and 2 were of another. I'm actually glad about that. They looked nice, felt sturdy and were an easy swap out. They lock and they tune and they are a better product than the Ping tuners my MIM came with. I do seem to have a dead spot (meaning kind of a lot of play with no result) on the D string. I tried swaping the D/E tuners and have the same issue. Other than that (which seems to be common regardless of tuners) they are nice.

I don't think you got hosed, I just think they are Ping tuners. If they work for you, then don't worry about it. I just bought a set of tuners that were sold as Schallers on ebay for big bucks, and now I'm afraid that they aren't the real deal.
By the way, do your tuners have the "F" on the locking knobs? |

All I have to say is that the Ping of today is definitely not the Ping of 10 years ago. Their quality has gone WAY up. That's why Floyd Rose himself actually has Original Floyd Roses made by Ping, now, as well as Schaller. They're the only company allowed to put the FR logo on the trem besides Schaller.

So unfortunately, the "F" only helps differentiate between the chrome plated Ping and Schallers. As I mentioned earlier, the techs at Fender say the Pings are an improvement. They have tighter gear lockup, and are designed so that the locking knob can not be unscrewed so that it falls off and gets lost. On a related note, I was told by a vendor that Gibson, who used Schaller TOM bridges on most models, as had to switch to Asian manufactured bridges because Schaller stopped supplying them. My advice, forget trying to buy "NOS" Fender Schallers on thEbay. No matter what you get, if you paid above the typical retail price, you're getting ripped off. |

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the one's you ordered. I'm happy with the one's I got and that's all that matters. Made in Germany, made in Taiwan, made in USA....as long as they are well made.

So if the Pings are better than the Schallers then thats fine and good. Still, I would be a little ticked if I ordered what I was led to believe were Shallers and received anything but while the vendor is well aware of it but not disclosing such. No soup for you!!!
