Thanks

Normally the ring that comes with a humbucker is set aside, not used on a Tele neck application. The PG is cut to fit nicely 'round the pup.

Actually, if you actually have room for a ring on top of the pickguard you may have you action pretty high + your neck 'bucker much higher than normal. I've never found room for one, which is too bad cuz had I found room, I could've used one of two or three botched pickguards I had laying around, the ring would've hidden the defect.

I agree with boris, but if you do have room then I think you wouldn't need a pickguard any different than one made for the humbucker. You could screw the ring to the pickguard like you would screw it to a body, you'd just need to make those screw holes. The two pickup mounting/adjustment screws would pass through the holes in the ring and in the pickguard. In fact you could mount just the ring to the guard using those screws with a couple of nuts, just to hold it in place while you mark the positions where you'll want those 4 screw holes.

I prefer the leaner and cleaner look of just the pickguard with no ring. A humbucker looks big already on a Tele, the ring adds a border that takes up more space and additional screws that add clutter. For traditional Tele single coil neck pickups as well, I like the cleaner look of a body mounted neck pickup because a pickguard mounted one exposes two more screws.
