Need some help...

I have made lots of nuts and bridge saddles for acoustic guitars with great results. I use synthetic bone and/or micarta. Hower lately, I've been getting this "sitar effect." You know, a whining kind of buzz. That's the best way I know to describe it. Do I need to widen or narrow the nut slots? I'm not sure what I'm missing here....

only on open notes?

does this buzz only happen when you are playing the strings open and not when they are fretted?

if it is, then maybe the nut slots need widening

try a shim

if it were my guitar, i would probably take the strings off, and put a shim under the saddle...although i'm not material you have available to use....

maybe one of your upper register frets is high
