Can I replace a 8 hole pickguard with a 5 hole?
Sorry for the dumb question but Im about to receive my new tele and I know I want to replace the pickguard. Just wondering I can use a 5 hole pickguard on a 8 hole tele? Thanks.

I did with mine. Put a '52 black pickguard on a MIA. Had to shave a bit down around the the neck cutout, and also around the curve around the control plate to get the mount holes to line up exactly(I blame the 22 fret neck on the MIA), but it fit in perfectly once I did.
Although I think I may need to shave a little bit of the neck pickup opening down also, as I think it may be pressing the pickup down just a bit on one side. |

Yes sir, you can.
Most 8 hole pickguard guitars have a pickguard mount neck pickup, except the Highway One. If you are not prepared to mount the neck pickup to the floor of the neck rout, you will have to drill two small holes in the 5 hole guard; I don't consider it a sin, having done so on two Am Se Teles. One two Highway One conversions, everything just screwed right on. The holes may or may not align. I spent more time replacing one 5 hole pickguard with another on my MIM Esquire than I did on the other two swaps, due to alignment issues. I didn't have to trim the guard on either of the Teles. I've replaced an 8 hole guard with a 5 holer more than once. The first time was putting a black '52 guard on an older highway 1 tele, also I put an MIJ '52 guard on a MIJ '62 body. Worked perfect for me, didn't even have to fill or drill any holes. I'd definately use genuine fender guards however. (learned this the hard way.)
