Dead string or???

I have a James Burton Standard with the Texas Special pups. I've noticed that the first string, compared to all of the others, sounds flat or dull and is not as loud as the other strings, especially when I go to play a scale or lead line from a song. I've tried adjusting the pup height, but the problem remains the same. I'm using D'Addario nine and a halfs. Would a change of the strings to something heavier cure this problem? Is this just a dead string or is it something that might be going on with the pup itself? Any insight into solving this problem will be greatly appreciated.

I've just fitted a Lace Sensor T100 bridge pickup into my old Tele and have found just the same problem on the top string. Can't be the string in my case, because it sounds fine on the neck pickup, so I'm puzzled too!
