Strat pups in a Tele?
Sorry if this is an ignorant question but I'm new to the Tele scene (although I've wanted one forever).
Right now I own a Strat with an SD Hot Rails in the bridge position, I'm going to replace all the pups in the strat with GFS Texas Wound Boston Blues pups. I want to get a cheap SX tele copy and replace the pups in that with the Hot Rails in the bridge and an SD Cool Rails in the neck. Both of these however are "Strat Pickups," so my question is can these be put into a Tele? Supposedly SX Tele copies come with the neck routed for a humbucker... I don't mind elbow grease and modifications to the cheap SX body if it is at all possible. Thanks!!!! |

The pickguard would need some modification for the neck, the bridge on the other hand wouldn't work, see the three screws that hold the pup? its in that triangle, and a strat pup is side to side...I guess if you did some drilling it might work...

Looks like the vintage bridge plate has no place or space to drill for the side to side holes-the modern bridge plate looks to just barely have it. I would just go with a Tele style bridge pickup-but hey-you might be a bit more adventurous than me! |

Putting strat pick ups in a Tele is like making Christina Aguilera sing like Jeremy Clarkson-IMHO
Although if you were going to do it, I suggest leaving the Bridge P'up and just changing the neck, and adding on a middle maybe.

What if I got a replacement bridge of the humbucker variety? They appear to have the screwholes on the right and left sides, id just have open space surrounding the Hot Rails pickup.
As shown here: http://www.wdmusic.com/fender_teleca...24663_prd1.htm Plus the SX bridge is supposed to be worthy of replacement anyway. |

That humbucker bridge plate is $75. You can buy a Seymour Duncan Hotrails Telecaster bridge pickup for $80 from Musicians friend ........... and your guitar wouldn't look like crap.

Yeah you have a point there, but that was just the first image I could find of one of those bridges, I've seen them for as little as $25.
The main thing is that I already have the Hot Rail, and I wanted to put it to some use in a Tele with a Cool Rail in the neck (it just seems like an awesome combo in a guitar body I love), but I guess it just isn't possible. Thanks for your help guys =-| |

I love a strat pickup in the neck of a tele, you can modify your pickguard or just get one that is strat pickup ready. As far as the bridge, good luck. How about a nashville style? Cool in the neck, hot in the middle, and a good tele bridge pickup. Have to find a bridge pickup that would balance with the hot rail, though.

i put a rail strat pup in a tele for a guy years ago; he did the wiring as i ain't electric...i didn't even use the screw holes...we built it up from underneath with layers of double face tape....don't laugh...that pup is STILL in that guitar....solid and working just fine....

Correct me if I'm wrong... but couldn't he just take the brass plate from the bottom of a tele bridge pup, glue it to the underside of a strat bridge pup and use it to mount in an ashtray bridge?
where there's a will there's a way.
