the butterflies

ok,another question here, found originally on my 78' tele are these 'butterfly wings' string trees. The one on the right with a spacer holds the D and G strings, while the other on the left that holds the B and E strings doesnt and have a shorter screw. Is this correct?Ive heard that string trees should be the same height? Thanks!

Yes they are string trees, but I have no idea about height.

Having string trees the same height shouldn't matter. What's important is the amount of pressure the strings put on the nut. The E/B tree is farther from the nut, too, so you end up with the deflection angles being similar, anyway.

They're fine

There is some variation on Fender guitars.
the 62 re-issue strat I have came with one string tree that had the spacer.
I have a '71 tele that has 2 string trees (should've come with only one originally) and neither one has a spacer.

I think you want a 15 - 17 degree breakover angle (downward angle referencing fretboard as zero angle) for all the strings.
A string tree for the e & b strings is common and sometimes for the d & g strings. But that angle is what you're aiming for. So, 1~2 winds around post for big e string. 1 ~ 2 more for the a string. more for the d and more yet for the g if you don't have string tree for those two strings. String trees setting the angle where they are used. I still wind on the whole string for the high e string but its probably not necessary.
