Output Jack Problem.

I put some new pups in my squier tele tonight. Everything went just fine except for one thing.

I solder everything in place and buttoned everything up for the test run, and.....nothing. I scratched my head for a while, unsoldered things and touched them to their respective places to see what worked and what didn't. Turns out that the ground from the input jack, when placed on the volume pot, shorts everything out, or I guess that is what it is doing.

Any suggestions from you experts on what's causing this? Thanks in advance.

I'd remove the output jack and make sure the hot lead isn't touching the ground. It could be a bad jack. Try another one if you have a spare. Get the thing working right before you re-install the jack.

Yes... the OUTPUT jack. Thank you. I'll give it a shot.

I'm still having no luck with this. I replaced the output jack and still am getting nothing when I touch the ground to the pot. Anyone else have any suggestions on what may be wrong?

Wire each pickup directly to the jack one at a time to check the pickups. If they work, it sound like you have wired something wrong. What schematic are you using? If you have a digital camera, post a picture of your control panel.

Jwells... The pups hum and pop on contact when everything is wired. They only short when the ground is placed on the pot. I'm very sure the pups are working properly. And, I have it wired exactly as it is shown on the Squier website.

I'm still very new to actually working on Telecasters, or any guitar for that matter. But I really have fun doing it. So maybe since this thing doesn't wanna work any way I do it, this might be a good time to upgrade everything under the control panel. It has 500k mini pots (yuck) and some super cheapy 3 way switch. I know the switch probably doesn't matter, but I definately want some 250k's. The guitar is way to bright with the 500's. I guess I am kinda using the "if you can't get the motor to start, put a new one in it" mentality. It's also just for fun. :D

I went to the Squier website for the wiring diagram for the Squier '51. I think I found a mistake on it. Go the the Fender website and look for a schematic for a Standard Telecaster.
It's got to be a mistake in your wiring.............. maybe a wire connected to the wrong pot lug.

I went and checked that out. The switch on the squier is different than the Fender one. The squier switch is has eight contact points in a row attached to a circuit board, so I went ahead and ordered a new wiring kit from stew mac with the 250k's. It needed em any way. Thanks for your help Jwells. Much appreciated.
