does the fact that the pickup is mounted to the pickguard have anything to do with the sound. 2004 american series tele.

IMO- I dont believe that it makes any difference, but it sure is easier, and quicker to adjust neck pickup height, by not having to remove the pickguard, and sometimes the neck to do so. :)
