OK, tell me where I screwed up

Ok put a 4 way in my burst STL50 today. Used a tone rider neck pup and used the stock bridge pup just cause I didn't have any screws to fit the tone rider bridge pup I was gonna use. Now I have sound in all 4 positions. It is also a different sound for each pos. My question is this, in pos. 3 I have just the neck pup, in pos. 1 both pups but is a muted type of sound almost humbucking sounding as it seems to be noise canceling. Second pos. is both again but again a different type of sound that isn't unpleasent at all. Not as loud shall we say as the first pos. The third pos. is just the neck and that sounds nice and thick. The 4th is both again but really a nice fat gritty tone that I really like the best. Any clue as to where I went wrong? I am using my other STL50 as a baseline as I put a 4 way in that one last year and it doesn't sound or act like this one.

Anyways guesstimates would be appreciated. Could I have the power and grnd's different? I would assume it would buzz like crazy if the grnds weren't correct. thanks for any help

Can you post some pics and/or indicate which 4 way diagram you used? Does the tonerider neck pickup come with 3 wires? If it has 2 wires only you'll have to separate the ground wire from the shield.

Can't post pics cause I ain't takin it apart again. The TR has 3 wires, hot and grnd and grnd for the pup cover. The bridge has 3 shielded wires if Iremember. Hot, grnd, and then like a general grnd for lack of a better term. Hot lead for the bridge went to 1 pos. hot lead for the neck went to 2 pos and then a jumper and then a wire to the vol pot. first pos. The grnd for the neck went to 4th pos closest to me when I was wiring it. there is a jumper from 4th furthest from me to 3rd closest to me. .05 cap went from tone pot middle to 3rd pos of the volume and then to grnd on the vol pot. There was a couple of other grnds too. Who knows maybe I'll leave it as is as the sound is different between 1 and 2 but slightly so but different. Just don't know why pos 3 is neck only and not pos one.

Schematic downloaded from guitar electronics or something like that. I am thinking that the schematic now that I think of it was for a humbucking sound. I don't know if that makes sense or not but I don't want to dig through the garbage to find it. thanks

How are we going to even try to help you with no pics and we don't know what wiring diagram you used?

Another question: Isn't the whole point of the 4 way switch to give you a 4th option that sounds vaguely like a humbucker?

Telepathy not working tonight unfortunately. Without pics or a diagram I can't see how anyone can possibly help you.

Don't really understand your posts. Why do you think something is wrong?

Anyway, normal four-way wiring gives the following selections:
1=bridge
2=bridge and neck in parallel
3=neck
4=bridge and neck in series (humbuckerish)

But if you're not willing to take it apart again or at least give people full definitive details of what you did, how do you expect to fix whatever is wrong?

I guess you wired it wrong. If you didn't make any mistakes it would work correctly.

Try to find the diagram in the garbage, open it back up, and check your work.
