the third pickup...

i've bought a second hand mim tele recently that someone modded to take a strat middle pickup (the pickups are all american standards)

i'm going to be changing the pickups soon and was told that having the third pickup reduces sustain (amongst other things) because of the extra magnets.
since i don't really use the middle pickup that much i just wanted to know other people opinions as to wether i should keep it in or not. is the third pickups sucking my tone?

I'm sure your guitar is fine. Enjoy it and don't listen to others. There are enough 3 pickup guitar players that don't 'suck' - just have a look at all those strat players, you know [insert your hero here].

EDIT: just noticed that it was your first post. Welcome to TDPRI, if you want to try a different middle pickup or try different wiring schemes then go right a head and try a few things. Nothing like making up your own mind about your tone.

welcome!
Is that Victoria, Australia? if so, yeeehaaahhhh! we got one more!!

*hem hem*

Ive never heard of extra pickups killing sustain, altho I guess the extra magnetic field would put some more drag on the string....
Anyway, I wouldnt worry about it, I mean, les pauls have 4 coils (2 humbuckers) and they sustain for days...

Just keep the pickups low enough that you don't get that strat 'warble'. Seems only the aussies are awake at the moment
