Removing the 22nd fret and the lip?
I think I've had it with the 22nd fret and the lip that are making changing pups, pickguards etc such a pain. And it's completely unuseful for me anyway.
I think I'm able to cut out the fret board extention with a jigsaw but I think the 22nd fret is slighly on the way. So what's the down and dirty method of removing the fret? I have pretty basic simple hand tools.

You could just pull it out.... but that is a suggestion from a person in a not so happy moment. You could try using an exacto knife to cut the finish so you don't chip it, I'd also try sanding it flat rather than using a jigsaw.

I've felt that way about the 22nd fret on my Squier Std. Tele for a long time. I don't play up there, and the overhang gets in the way. PITA. Haven't done anything about it because it's only an irritant when I'm doing something else- too much of a hurry to play.
With no power tools, I think I would first pull out the fret. Then I would take whatever saw I had available and cut back the overhang to about 1/16" or so. Finish up by block sanding to take it down to flush. If you try it, let us know how it turns out, OK? |

Ok, I did it. Basically no problems.
Just pulled the fret out with a thin, sharp knife (somethink like carpet knife, just smaller) after cutting the finish (if there was any) on both sides of the fret. Then I used fine teethed electric jigsaw to cut the rosewood lip off quite close to the neck and sanded off the rest of it. Then the surprise. The neck originates from a cheap tele kit and much to my surprise the neck heel is actually longer than in regular teles (and the neck pocket it should sit in is that too). So what you might ask? Well, the lip was completely unnecessary anyway since there was enough room for the 22nd fret even without the lip. Basically I removed the fret for no other reason than to have some working space there What I did? I pressed the fret back in its hole - so now I have a 22 fret neck without a lip hindering modifying operations.

I wish they just didn't even put the 22'nd fret on fenders.

Yesterday I put this guitar into battle situation, studio session. It turned out that when I placed the once removed 22 fret back into its place, there was a little gap in the treble E side.
So the E string sticked into the gap, over and over again. I was in a hurry and slightly irritated so I grapped a screwdriver and removed the fret between the takes. So it's gone. But there's a slot. Need to fill it sometimes.

You're showing up to do studio work with a cheap tele kit that you've modified with a carpet knife and a screwdriver?

I'm pretty sure you can fill the gap with some brown shoe wax . . maybe mix it slightly with toothpaste to match the fretboard's grain . .
OK, . . you needed a quick fix . . and it works . . so what!?
