Tuning pegs for Telecaster copy?
Hi!
I bought a cheap Telecaster Copy. It's a Jay Turser JT TL50 and I have two questions! It plays well after I adjusted the action a bit. It stayed in tuned pretty well from last night when I changed the strings but the tuning pegs are pieces of junk. They are loose and tuning back and forth to an alternated tuning would be a real pain... I could get a set of grover tuners for 35$ First question: Do you think it would fit?? Pictures: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Also, the 15th fret seems to be "higher" or is it the trussrod that needs adjustment. The way I adjusted the action it doesn't buzzes but I can't lower it as much as my USA Tele (it doesn't cost the same price either!) otherwise, it buzzes at the 15th fret, particularly at the 2-3 and 4th strings. It is very playable though. The action is not too high, just a bit higher than what I'm used to. What do you think is the problem? Is it a common problem. (It's my second question.) I'm waiting for Wilde/Bill Lawrence pickups to put in my USA Tele and the old pickups will go in the Tele copy. In all, I would say that the body is good (alder), the neck too (for the price). The tuning pegs are very cheap, the 3-way switch too and probably all the other electronic components... The pickups are not very noisy though. I'm surprised! |

On the tuners, remove one and check the hole diameter. There are generally 2 sizes of tuner holes: 10mm (13/32") and 11/32". The smaller size are typical on vintage style tuners (similar to what you have). The Grovers should be 10mm. If the tuners you have are the smaller holes, look for a set that looks similar - usually referred to as "vintage style". They can be found at stewmac.com or guitarfetish.com for example. Locking vintage style are also available.
If you still want to go with the grovers, you'd have to enlarge the holes (often done with a reemer). On the fret, you might have one that's high and needs to be leveled out. The easiest thing to do is use a small straight edge (feeler gauge) and lay it across 3 frets. It should lay flat across all 3. Check this out: fret rocker . You can probably make something like this at home. |

Thank you very much for your advices! It will be very helpful and I'm grateful to you!
Since the Jay Turser is a cheap tele project, I'll see how it would cost me to buy Klusons tuners. I too think that the 15th fret is higher. It would makes perfect sense! I'm not a pro though! When I look at a neck, I don't really see if something is wrong yet! Pic of the neck: ![]() I think this 175$ CAD guitar sounds good for what it is!
