1967 Coronado question
I know I am in the wrong place to ask about the following guitar but...I found a 1967 Fender Coronado 12 string for sale in my area and the guy is asking $1000.00 for it. Is this guitar collectible ?? Thank you.

I believe that they're somewhat kinda not amazingly collectible (but I'm no expert). Ah, but they also really quite cool guitars! You should check it out and see if it's in good shape and playable, and evaluate it as a player...

When I was in high school, a looong time ago, one of my guitar buddies had a Fender Coronado XII. I had a Yamaha classical and we would trade off. When he played lead on the Yamaha, I played rhythm on the 12. Btw, the guy's name was Clemmons.
It's a cool guitar, and 12s seem to be making a comeback. $1000 sounds kind of high, but I know nothing of the collectible side. If it's in excellent shape, who knows, it might be a good investment. Check with real collectors.

I just looked at completed auctions on eBay, and regular Coronados seem to be going for over a grand, so a 12-string certainly should! Like I said, if it's in good shape and you like it, it's probably a keeper!

I've got a 1966 Fender student steel. Like Mustangs and Duo-Sonics, it is only considered a "collectible" by the guy trying to sell one.
I'd drag a good tube amp and guitar cable over there, a new set of strings if they'll let you, and give the guitar a try. If it makes you giggle, offer $ 850 and bring her home.

If you have lots of discretionary income, and can sit on it for a few years...sure...why not.
If you want to play it while you are sitting on it...give it a good wringing-out before you get out your paper bag full of twenties. I haven't played lots of Coronados...but I have yet to bond with one. At my house all they do is stop for a cup of coffee... If you know what I mean.

I've played a couple of 12-string guitars briefly and they didn't have enough appeal to me, for me to want one for myself.
I've never seen up close, or had a chance to play, a Coronado. But I love the looks of the Coronado Wildwood II with two P-90-looking pickups on page 151 of Tony Bacon's The Ultimate Guitar Book. |
