Deft nitro + white acrylic lacquer-- will it yellow?
I just finished painting a strat body w/ Duplicolor white acrylic lacquer and I'll be ready for the clear coat stage soon.
I have a couple cans of Deft Nitro that I'd like to use, but I wanted to verify w/ those here that have used it as to whether or not it will yellow. I know it has UV protectants in it, which would help against yellowing, but I want to be sure before starting. I also have some Duplicolor clear acrylic lacquer that I know won't yellow, so it would be the safer route, but I'd prefer a nitro top coat on this body so it will wear in a little better. Will the Deft nitro lacquer yellow w/ age? |

The Deft will yellow some eventually, but so will the Duplicolor.
I cannot promise the Deft will be more durable than the Duplicolor. Nitro lacquer just has a deeper luster when shined up good, but acrylic lacquer depending on type is a close second. If you are trying to avoid yellowing, keep the guitar body out of the light as much as possible, especially sunlight.

"Clear" coats do more to promote yellowing than to stop it.

Is that why 60's strats in Olympic White are still snow white after all those years-- because there's no clear coat? |

![]() This one isn't white anymore! '88. ![]() White acrylic lacquer will probably hold it's "whiteness" pretty well.

I agree with JD- No clear necessary. The color will buff up nicely and be just as glossy. Don't know about the fading issue though, but I also think that "color only" will retain most of it's brilliance.
Clear coats over color do have a purpose though. One is protection from chips. The clear will chip and the color will be mostly unaffected. The clear is also used to build up the surface for filling and leveling. Not that you couldn't also do this with color only- but why? And, the clear will add depth and warmth to the finish that you can't get by buffing the color alone. |
