Re-wiring - PLEASE HELP!
I was wondering if anyone can help me with some problems I'm having re-wiring my 91 Japanese Tele.
I followed the standard tele diagram from Mr Gearhead while taking into account differences that my guitar has: both red p-up wires (rather than black) are grounded, white p-up wires (rather than yellow) are connected to the switch and both p-ups have shield wires which are also grounded. (all grounds are to the back of the volume pot, and then to the bridge) Firstly, the pickups are the wrong way round (surely just a case of switching the white pickup wires?) and secondly, with the switch in the middle position, neither pickup works. There's also a lot of hum coming from the guitar, does this mean it's not grounded properly? I'm kind of a beginner at the electronics side of things so any help you can offer me would be appreciated. Thanks...

I THINK I may have an idea...
After a bit of a think on this one, and a look at the drawing you sent me (which is a bit different from the Gearhead drawing you linked to), the ONE thing that would give you the no-sound-in-the-middle symptom you describe would be if your toggle switch has the COMMON lug at the opposite end of its contacts, compared to the one in the drawing.
I've posted the drawing you sent me with my edit to "correct" for YOUR toggle (my assumtion!) at: http://deaf-eddie.net/tele-redraw.jpg Please notice that the pup leads also go to the opposite side of the switch from what was indicated in your drawing... This correction should fix the hum from the middle position, because you will now have TONE there - but Teles just do BUZZ a bit, you know... |
