could you wire an esquire like this?

just a totally random thought. a little humbucker like a little 59 as the pickup and use the switch as a coil tap-like
1. bridge, sc, no tone
2, sc, tone
3. hb+ tone.

or something. would it work? would it be terrible?

It would sound pretty thin in single coil mode. I think instead of the HB/SC positions I'd go Parallel/Series.

how about wiring it like a standard esquire and put either a push/pull pot on the volume control or a mini switch to split the coils

My experience is that parallell coils tend to sound thinner than single (split) coil wiring. YMMV though...

don`t put a switch in , use it as a full humbucker then use a push push pot to coil tap and a regular tone and volume control , give you all the tone and variety you need and very simple for onstage use .
