Tele neck pickup chrome cover loose ?

Hi, new to this, and a new guitar begginer.
Purchased an as new mint tele standard MIM off ebay. It is unplayed condition.
I have noticed that the chrome cover on the neck pickup is slack.
If you move the screws on either side it jacks up and down for adjustment as I think it should but the cover remains slack.
My question is should this be and if not how can I fix it ?
Cheers Eddie

It shouldn't be loose. The cover is held on by three little bent tabs on the bottom of the pickup. The easiest was to correct it is to loosen the strings and remove the pickguard and pickup together. Once you get to the underside of the pickup you probably find that you can just bend a couple of the tabs and tighten it up.

Thanks for that, does it take a lot of doing ? are the wires long enough to lift it up and get at the tabs under the pickguard ?
After doing this what hight should I set the pickup to the strings ?
Thanks Eddie

Best thing to do would be to take a measurement before you remove it, but Fender has a Setup Guide for Teles that'll give you a starting point.

Here's a picture of a Tele neck pickup showing the tabs I mentioned above. However I'm looking at another neck pickup I have here that has no tabs. Don't know how it's held on ........ probably just friction plus the soldered ground.

If it's potted the wax will hold it in place without tabs.

Hi, took the plate off last night, no tabs on mine but what I did find was that it has a rubber tube on each screw, or should I say should have, on assembly at the factory one had missed the screw and was just sitting next to the screw. I put this back onto the screw put the plate back on set it up and it is sorted, sounds better as well, now I can adjust the hight correctly.
Thanks all for the help.
Eddie
