Can compensated saddles be flipped?

I did do a search but couldn't find much about this.

Can the D-G saddles in the compensated sets, be flipped over or screwed from the opposite side to give better intonation with wound G strings?

cheers

It depends on the set. Many have flat bottoms.

The saddles on the Wilkinson bridge w/ compensated saddles from GuitarFetish can be flipped. I'm planning on experimenting with a wound G, and I'm planning on having to flip the middle saddle too.

Stew Mac barrels are cylindrical and can be flipped. You can also use a straight barrel Allparts saddle in the center. I've found that not all D + G strings benefit from being slanted backwards when the G string is wound, but I'm in the minority, I gather.

I don't understand what you are saying here, can you elaborate?

Flipping will not reverse the angle on compensated saddles if this is what you are getting at.

Depends on how you do it. If you remove the height screws and pivot the saddle 180 degrees about the intonation screw ........ then reinstall the height screws, the angle will be reversed.

Remove the screws... Not sure why I never thought about that. Too funny, thanks for the nudge. ;)

Yeah, you gotta do this on Stew Mac # 5167 saddle sets all the time. For some weird reason they seem to come in the package left handed; that is, the "extra" saddle is set up for slanting the wrong direction.

One time I opened 6 packages at once and rearranged the saddles as they be needed for the bridge plates, and only had to swap one single saddle. But it only takes seconds, no big deal.

As for the previous question, standard knowledge is that the center saddle is slanted the wrong way when you switch to a wound G string. I'm saying, install the saddle, monkey with it, and you may find by adjusting the heights of the D and G that the strings will intonate OK, again, also depending on string guage. My "wound G" sets are D'Ads with fairly small G string diameter.

That's what I do.

Although, I'm not sure why there isn't more love for the Danny Gatton method -- bend the screws, and there's a wide range of subtle adjustments you can make. With each half-turn of the screw, a side of the barrel takes its turn being "in front."
