Tinted necks.. in the future?

since all these fender and allparts nitro necks are being tinted with this orange coat to make them look like vintage necks... when they actually BECOME vintage.. will they be super super orange? or is there some sort of cut off?

I did a bunch of deep tints back the middle of last year; I got tired of the walnut look neck after a while. It did come in handy to save a real nice sounding neck just covered in bad natural stains in the maple.
The one thing I would change first at G + L, given the power, is to dump those G.O.T. (which stands for Gawdawful Orange Tangerine) tints they do for a very restrained maple tint. The G.O.T. got applied over some tasty birdseye, which is nuts. ( It has been backed off some, thanks, G + L)
I don't think it will turn to black; instead it will develop an opaque look or a milky look depending on the finish composition. I am not gonna stop dead from buying these tints, but I ain't putting too many eggs in that basket, if you know what I mean.

I've wondered this myself. I assume the real nitro tinted necks will get darker and maybe the poly tint not as much. Just a guess. Hopefully I will be around long enough to find out.

I understand the premise of your Post...and really just don't know the answer, I don't feel they will get THAT much darker ?...One thing that I have gotten in trouble with before, around here...is that back in the Jurassic era, when the 50s stuff were New...they were never as Pale and White, as you see now on Squiers...MIM Standards, and American Series....not as tinted as the Classic series or 52AV are now....but more of a natural amber...and of course they weren't Satin, like the Modern Pale boys.

It's going to vary with the reaction to UV light and will depend on the chemical properties of the colourants and any finish applied. Different paints, stains and varnishes have different rates of absorbtion and some claim very strong resistance to UV which will prevent or at least deter yellowing or darkening.

Hey sorryto hijackthe thread. So I have a matching set of an american tele and an american strat. The problem is the tele is a 2003 model and the strat is a 2005 model. Both have maple boards but the strat is quite a bit more pale. I'm guessin cause it's newer, so do you think I could let it kinda "sunbath" a little and get the finishes a little closer?

I dont think todays nitro is the same as the 50's nitro was.

The older nitro was sprayed on so thin just a couple years of playing made the necks look super reliced.

I can take any new NOS Custom Shop with a nitro finished neck and play it for 2 years and it wont look worn at all.

There's a couple of recent threads - one on adding a tint and one one leaving it in the sun. There's loads more threads so it's worth having a go with the search tool.

I don't think Strats look too bad with a paler neck anyway but it depends on the body colour - plus personal taste of course.

You can still get "old School" nitro although probably not from Fender.. Most of the stuff the big companies are using is a hard lacquer with a hardener in it.

The "new nitro necks" don't yellow as much as the nitro necks from way back.
Dan Erlewine talks of the nitro available today as non-yellowing lacquer in his book and from what I heard the nitro available today is nothing like the one available 50/60 years ago.
You might notice a slight darkening over the years due to UV rays but that happens to both the lacquer and the wood underneath...

Cheers,

Sascha
