The Emeraldcaster Project (aka Son of Meloncaster)

Well kids, the parts are mostly collected...the body is cut out and (mostly) grainfilled and sealed. I have a fine Allparts necks. Checkerboards from Brian England. Binding from StewMac. Somewhere I have a box full of hardware. Plus, and this might be the most important, out in the garage I have a quart can of DEFT and a box full of PREVAL sprayers ... and that all important respirator.

and I think I'm ready to start the nitty gritty soon.

Do you want to wait and see the finished product in a few months...

Or would you rather see just about every painful proceedure and mistake?

By the way, I have to admit that I am no Ed Hawley. I bought some of these parts ready made.

This will be the best! If there's a name for that finish,
I'm pretty sure it's Zircon Encrusted Christmas Tree Green.
You'll need a Jimmy Martin outfit with that one!

Color Suggestion

May I make a suggestion to match Mazda's Emerald Green used on the 2001 Miata? Not that I'm biased or anything.

Don't know if that last part of your "dream" will come true.

Your comment about the rosewood fingerboard all of a sudden reminded my of the Lizardcaster.

About '75 my buddy (who was playing banjo in a band with me) got his hands on an ANCIENT rosewood board strat. Somebody had already painted it green metalflake. Horrible job. Rough as all get out.

Figuring that it was already gone (hey! that would be a good title for a song!) we decided to go all the way...I cut out and inlayed little lizards where the dots used to be.

Great! I'm glad to see this BuckoSparklecaster is being built. I'm really anxious to see how the Preval unit works with the glitter. I'm particularly interested to understand what type of nozzle allows the glitter to pass through the spray unit and how well it covers. I went the rattle spray and sprinkle dry and rattle spray clear route and it used a ton of clear; at least thirty coats. Preval must be better.

I'm holding off on my next Sparklecaster build until Uncle Buck gives us the full tutorial. This winter's job is a simple Telecaster style classic 60's Partscaster for me.

If anyone needs sparkle, drop me a private message. I've got lots of glitter that I can send you as a free sample.

Aye laddie, a wee bit of the emerald green . It will be perfect for those st. Patrick's day gigs!

I am glad to see you willing to iron out all of the kinks, and to get a perfect sparkle with a pre-val. Thanks for showing all the struggles and revelations along the way!

Are you still doing a John Deere Green too?

Gosh! It sounds like I don't have much of a choice!

I'll be sure to crank up the old Olympus and capture all of the gory detail.

The way it looks now, I should start on the back binding tomorrow night.

(How's that for commitment?)

Thanks for all of the warm fuzzies.

So buck, I imagine the can of deft and the prevals are an attempt to eliminate the need for you to visit your pro painter buddy with a paper bag that's brown out the outside and green on the inside? It would be great to learn a homegrown method for covering the "flake" aka green sparkle pixie dust!
<obvious>This will be fun!</obvious>
c'mon get goin'!

just caught the end of the melloncaster thread, nice work w/ spankdaplank.
so um, er, nevermind

Hey bucko!
so did you use paint with pearl as the source for the flake?
binding done? Hands super glue free yet?

Binding not done.

Binding not started.

No super glue on hands.

Tests corrected!

A few months ago I took Hockey Rocker up on his gracious offer to send me some samples of flake. It (barely) goes through the PREVAL, and from the samples I have done, seems like it will work.

I'm sure your students will appreciate it, the ones that passed anyway. I know how work gets in the way, ah to independently wealthy, well at least we have our teles. I'll check with spankdplank, the site arlo posted says it's .004, looked awful small to me, but I'm am the ultimate neophyte.

So you want the painful details?

Here are the supplies we will need to cut the channel for the back binding.

The world's worst handheld router, my box of Grizzly bearing-guided rabbeting cutters, a microcometer, some binding, and a body.

Let's measure up the binding.

It's this high.

and this thick.

Once we know that we can set up the cutter in the router.

The depth (thickness) of the cut is pretty good. I'll leave this bearing on.

Then we need to put the cutter in the router and set it to cut the proper depth.

That looks pretty good. We don't even really need to look at the numbers on the micrometer. Just set things so that they match up.

We'll make a pass on a piece of scrap to check things.

Pretty bad picture, but it does fit pretty good.

Now let's clamp down the body and cut a channel.

I discovered tonight that it is pretty difficult to route and take photos at the same time. You sort of have to keep both hand on the router.

Ouch!

While removing a clamp, I got a bit cocky and lazy, and hit the wood with the end of a clamp. Dum da dum dum!

Fortunately this body is getting painted.

Maybe that why ALL of my bodies get painted.

With my freshly routed body, I'm moving in the house to glue on the binding. Here are the supplies I'll be using.

Pretty straight forward. Binding, cyanoacrylate glue, scissors, and some filamented strapping tape.

Let's prepare some tape.

Got to cut this stuff with the Fiskars. It's tough!

We'll put it in storage for future use.

Those teacher's editions come in handy!

And now...we start glueing.

Remember when you were a kid and glued those balsawood airplanes together? For best results you would always put a "priming" layer of glue down...something to soak into the wood first...before you put the real glue on? Gonna do the same thing here.

While that is soaking in, let's try to shape the binding to fit some of the bends. (Actually, I did this before I put on the glue.)

And let's work on the shape of the recurve.

YES! That is an official teacher's pen that I am using!

When we are happy with things, let's put some more glue on and start taping things in place.

ever thought about doing a theme guitar.. pixiescaster?? :) i don't know entirely what that means other than it would have to do with the pixies, but i think you could do it. :) haha good luck!
