Now that that is out of the way...

I put what should be the last real coat of clear on these today.

Should be enough goop on them now to sand them good and flat.

I'm going to soon have more sparkle guitars than I know what to do with.

I guess that is a good thing.

But tomorrow I'm heading off for a few days.

We'll let the goop dry and have some fun.

If you know what I mean!

Bucko, I dunno what the laws are up around your way, but to me, thems look like kiddie fireworks. No offense

Down here in the swamp, I signed a paper declaring that I'm clearing the railroad tracks of varmints, let em Xerox my driver's license, and I got all the big boom booms a semi-mature graying kid could ever want or need ... I am probably on some terrorist watch list; but what the hell, you only go around once

*however* despite the major firepower available at my fingertips, I remain enamored of the lowly bottle rocket, as pictured in your picture. Back in high school, we used to tool around neighborhoods with a Coke bottle and a gross of bottle rockets, and the guy riding shotgun would aim them for the front doors. Way fun, in the [mostly] harmless hoodlum way! A couple years ago, I got a bug in my rear on July 4 and decided I needed to see how many bottle rockets I could make go off under the water in my canal out back... I'd light 'em and hurl 'em into the murky depths. Great fun, but the pitcher's elbow lasted for a week!

Keep the lacquer stowed and tightly capped before you mess with the boom booms, folks

That's why I build...

TATER GUNS

This puppy has a 4"x24" chamber and 2"x42" barrel. Optimally, I'd like a to have a 48" barrel based on the chamber size, but that was all the longer that the piece of SCH40 I had was.

She's a good gun though, sends a golf ball 200+ yards one just hairspray.

Happy 4th everyone.

Now that was funny! Especially the terrorist watch list part. Thanks for the chuckle so early in the morning Bob. Have a great weekend y'all!!

Tonight I play at a mud run tractor pull event with FWC and David Stone a Johnny Cash impersonator. It's been raining here for a month straight. Should be plenty of mud and lots of Bud

It's actually a dark green metalflake/holoflake, but Surf Green metalflake does sound cool. They actually make a flake that is similar to that color...

Re-watching the pilot episode of the Sarah Connor Chronicles this afternoon.

Our hero, John Connor, sits in Mr. Ferguson's class (right before he's attacked by a Terminator robot.)

Mr. Ferguson demands that his students pay attention in class. Remind you of anyone?

(Mr. Ferguson was really played by character actor Gary Houston.)

The Desert Rose Band, arguably the best country rock band ever, recorded "One Step Forward and Two Steps Back."

I lived that song today...

The "job" for this afternoon was to give this body its final sanding an buff it up.

The way I work, it should have been a 2-3 hour job. Done in plenty of time to catch the Brewers on the electric radio...

Top and back are done and it's time to move on to the horns

But wait!

What is that "funny" sound? Sort of like a drum head. Too much like a drum head!

I pressed down on the clear and it DID NOT press back. Just sort of went down. Until I hit the flake below it!

Nuts!

Well, let's start digging and see what is going on...

This is NOT going to be good...

and it is going to just keep on getting worse...

and worse

The layer of flake has just completely delaminated. Some is stuck to the clear goop. Some is stuck to the body. But it isn't stuck to itself!

Arrrrrrggggghhhhh!

Well, I always thought I could do this body better!

So let's get rid of what hasn't already peeled off.

Something is not right here.

The stuff that is left on the guitar is sort of soft and gooey...but not really.
It sands. But doesn't sand well. With any heat or pressure at all it turns into a SAE 200 sludge and gums up the disk.

Fortunately I have a big box of 80 grit disks, and before you know it...

we have this funky natural body with pink binding!

Does it work for you?

Didn't think so.

It cleaned up nicely.

And took the new base coat well.

Hope tomorrow goes better than today did...

and I, being the optimist that I am, have a high degree of confidence that it pretty much might sort of maybe be...

Thats a bummer, Bucko. Could it be a reaction between lacquer and auto goop?

yup it is...but you win some, you lose some...

there has been something about this particular body that has been bothering me since I started it.

I don't think it is a lacquer/goop thing.

I'm leaning towards not enough lacquer over the flake. While I was taking it off, loose flake was all over the place.

Nothing was holding it down.

Not good.

The coating SHOULD be (or at least I intend it to be) MONOLITHIC. It should be one continuous hunk o'stuff from wood to surface.

Obviously, that wasn't the case here.

Aha!

A chance to improve the process!

It's a sign Bucko. The only person around here that should be playing a pink bass is Tim Armstrong

That my friend, may be closer to the truth than anybody around here wants to hear.

While some lacquer dries, I'm heading out to the "shop" to (re)commence the pink flaking process...

Let's see...how is Operation Recovery going today...

First thing is to make some modifications to the design of the DiWiDi Technologies Flake Applicator

Double the number of holes.

That makes it the Mk II I reckon!

Look what I found in the bottom of a paper cup.

That must be about $2 worth of unused goop.

"Game on" anybody?

I'm going to try a new way to apply the flake on this unbound body. Don't know if it will work on the bodies with that insipid checkerboard binding...but I am going to give it a try here.

This screw is going to be very important. Hope it is where the strap pin will go!

Now we will remask the control cavities. Gee! It seems like I have been here before!

The green tape is important. That blue stuff will not work. Ask me. I know.

While I was putting the flake on I was busier than a one-armed paperhanger with the hives. Sorry no photos.

But so far, it looks like it is working. Notice what that screw allows me to do.

Now the rest of the day will be devoted to trying to bury that flake under some goop.

Nobody! I mean NOBODY can ever say that I don't give these finishes "my all."

I was taking out some flake that was incorrectly placed by the DiWiDi Technologies Mk II Flake Applicator and the good old No. 11 blade caught my finger.

Right through that protective glove (snap!) it went.

Maybe use some DiWiDi Technologies Instant Bond Super Dooper Super Glue on it. Should seal up that little cut in no time, and have you back in the game.

Not to mention maybe even occasionally playing one of those many beauties you have sitting around there.

How about some artsy stuff...

Darkened garage.

On camera flash.

200mm lens focused as close as I could get...

What did that UPS driver tell me once? Oh yeah, "Don't give up your day job."

I was in and out of the house a lot today.

Every time this guy and his two siblings would jump off the bird feeder and head for the bushes...all the while chatting me out for having the audacity to interfere with their feeding habits.

I just consider myself fortunate.

The Old Buckocaster may well be the only TDPRI member to ever see real-live squirrels!

The logo on this external hard drive looks a little familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on what it reminds me of.
