The Meloncaster Project (aka Son of Buttercaster)

I want to be like Ron!

I want to be like Jack!

I want to be like Tom!

I want to be like Rob!

I want to be like Arlo!*

The only way that will happen is if I get of my rear end...and start putting things together again.

So here goes...

You might remember that last March I shaped a couple of bodies. I have been obsessing with this one.

Putting DEFT sanding/sealer on.

Taking it off.

Putting it on.

Taking it off.

Trying to make it perfect.

Today it hit me.

This body is going to be covered with THICK sparkly paint.

There is probably NO NEED to be obsessive.

So...

here is a review...

the body, and the sparkle.

here is the alder body all covered with multiple coats of DEFT sanding/sealer and 220 sanded to a point that should be GOOD ENOUGH.

and the back

we'll wipe it down with a tack cloth and spray the base coat for the sparkle.

Are you ready for this?

KRYLON OUTDOOR SPACES 2922 Watermelon. (satin)

Gee. That is intense!

That might look good with white binding.

But not this one.

Now I guess I'd better go grab a neck and put that base coat on the headstock.

Then wait for it to get good and dry.

Here is the plan.

Knock down any dust/high spots.

Mist on a couple of coats of clear DEFT to seal the base.

Put on a WET coat of DEFT.

Sprinkle on the Sparkles.

Repeat as needed.

This should be fun!

Steve Dikkers
aka Buckocaster51

*my advanced apologies to anybody I missed.

My friends at Allparts sold me this perfectly lovely maple neck...

so of course, the first thing I do to it is this...

Oh my!

That is going to be intense!

I'll let it dry tonight.

Hit it with DEFT tomorrow.

You are a brave soul!
Since it's "watermelon" , why not make the sides watermelon green and add a nice fat off-white binding to look like rind. speckle a few "seeds" here and there, and you'll be ready for a Fourth of July picnic!

Well alright! Can't wait to see how the glitter goes down! My inexperienced experiments have not gone too well, just doesn't seem to want to stick too well. Using sand/sealer instead of straight deft though. Was thinking of trying that 3M spray glue. If that doesn't pan out I was gonna throttle back and look for a purple metallic. Either way, seat upright, tray locked, ready to learn...

white binding would be a great accent.

Thanks guys.

I went out tonight and shot some sealer coats of DEFT clear.

So...if eveything checks out tomorrow, I am going to try to make some of that pink sparklestuff stick in all of the right places.

This should be a hoot and a half!

The GRINCH is GREEN with envy!

I like Sparkle...heu...but this is intense yeah...

Not long ago my wife ordered some of these pigments for her projects... and for mines

http://www.firemountaingems.com/search.asp?skw=pigments

To be used with this

http://www.firemountaingems.com/deta...p?PN=K092775BS

You are inspiring me, but I will try something less... intense.

But that's also because of the type of music I play.

I'm curious to see how your project will end up. Cool one.

Let's get special...

Gilles

Here we go with the GREAT EXPERIMENT...

by the way...I am sure the KRYLON people call this particular color MELON because it looks like the inside of a very rip watermelon...not the outside...not a muskmelon...not a cantelope...but the inside of a ripe watermelon...

Here is the painted & sealed headstock with the sprinklejar of purple sprinklesparkles

the PLAN is to put a real wet coat of DEFT on the headstock and then sprinkle some sparkles. That is a two-handed job. Probably no pictures unless I can think of a way that I haven't thought of.

So, with a real heavy coat of DEFT and trying to sprinkle the sparkles on until it looks like everything is covered, this is what we have.

another shot

and a view from the side

OMG! This stuff is THICK!

I'm scratching my head about right now.

Gonna let it dry, brush it off with a soft bristled brush, and see what we have.

It'll take about 50 coats of clear to get smooth.....

Well then now there then now...

I wish I knew what I was doing!

This has the potential to be so great...

Or so bad...

It's dry enough, so let's get rid of the loose stuff and find out what is going to stay behind.

It IS a bit splotchy!

I'm going to shoot for coverage like just off the brush

If I can get it all to look like that, I may be happy.

But I'll tell you...this is going to be THICK, THICK, THICK!

So I am going to shoot some more clear on the skimpy parts and sprinkle some more sparkles in place.

Back to the drying rack for a couple of hours.

One thing I know for sure...those purplesparklesprinkleflakes are soon going to be EVERYWHERE in the shop!

I suppose you havn't shot any clear OVER the sparkles yet?

I was thinkin' that the solvent in that next clear coat might just let those sparkles flatten and settle down.

Or maybe if you shot a thick base of clear, let it dry, then sprinkle, and mist with some BLUSH ERASER or LACQUER THINNER,that would let those flakes settle down, and "melt in". Just a thought. It may just melt the color layer too!

I like how you havn't done any test pieces.......just straight to the neck! That's GUSTO!

GUSTO or something else!

One of my problems (and I'll admint it, I have LOTS of problems) is that I haven't really ever looked at how big flake lays on the base and in the clear.

The long term plan is to hall this to my buddy the motorcycle painter's shop for the clear. While I am no expert with those modern two-part finishes, I am pretty sure that it will build fast enough to cover most of this flake

Or at least I hope so!
