Where do I get the patience? Ha! No steekin' patience here. I want that thing done...and I want it done now! Except if I do that, it won't be done right...not that it will be done right if it takes me three months.

After considering all of the alternatives, advice, and the voices in my head, the decision has been reached...
I have it looking like this. All of the pinkpixiedust has been sealed under a couple of cans of DEFT...and it ain't going nowhere...nor is the lacquer building up in any noticeable way. Resins sound like they would be good, but on the next one...not this one...so today I am throwing the body and neck into a bag along with a bunch of money...and it's going off to Bob the Painter...for a coat of Amazing Motorcycle Clearcoat. Depending upon how busy he is I should be able to pick up this little project soon. ![]() You know, right now it looks quite a bit like those textured ceilings from the 70s!

So six hundred million billion and ten wasn't too far off, bummer! Well when I attempt it I will indeed stand in the shoulders of a giant, looking forward to the resinspaklecaster. I'm not a betting man, but I imagine while the melon meets the motorcycle man there is some alder, poplar, or some such species that now or will in the very near future be telecaster shaped.
On may way to do some Googlin' on resins... Thanks for the sparkle inspiration.

Inspiration is what it is all about!
![]() This guy thinks so too. (Even if he doesn't show it!)

Sparkle Finishes
For those of us unable to finish our own guitars, I'm looking for someone who can do a large gold metal flake finish similar to a Dick Dale strat. I want the best cause I've heard about problems with the Allparts finishes. Who do you recommend.

Marty Bell seems to get a lot of buzz.

So kids, when we last left this "project" the body and neck were at "Bob the Painter's" place, waiting for a miracle, high build, clear finish.
I was passing by Bob's place today and stopped in. We talked for a bit and decided that I could save some $$$ (and that's always good) by brushing on the first few coats of Imron. So I brought everything back to the garage. Here are the party supplies: ![]() a body, a neck, the Imron, the Imron Activator, a mixing cup, a brush, and "a clean, well-ventilated" workspace. Sometimes I wonder what I get myself involved in. Let's mix some up with a 3:1 ratio and spread it on... ![]() First reactions: from the smell of it, it is a SERIOUS chemical...definitely respirator time! it builds MUCH faster than clear spray OR brush on DEFT It looks like it will take another 2-3 coats to get it to the point where it can be sanded smooth.

Here we are, on the line drying/curing after two coats of Imron.
![]() The stuff is building up like crazy. I think Bob has pointed me in a good direction. Looks like I have been busy with some other stuff too. The Fiestacaster's clear DEFT is still drying. I am in no hurry on that. The Coralcaster has its first coat of 1956 Buick Tahiti Coral. There is white binding hiding under there. A final coat of Coral tomorrow, a day to dry...it looks like I might be ready to scrap bindings this weekend. Then I can start clearing it. Got a note from the Guitar Mill today...wood for four (4) more bodies on the FedEX truck. Next week should be fun.

Jeez Steve, you went from needing inspiration/encouragement to almost having too much! Are these SEVEN Teles just part of the hobby, or do you have bigger and better things in mind?
It's worth noting that I have a body and two necks on my workbench and three more necks on the way - so you're not alone! I'll be placing an order with Guitar Mill shortly. |

...but... ...I COULD retire from my "day job" (teaching) at the end of the next school year. I am sort of exploring the waters...to see how much fun it would be putting the together the same guitar...day after day after day... ...sort of like teaching the same chapter...year after year after year...is what I am thinking. Three of the eight I have going right now are commissions. We'll just have to see how things go I guess. re going from needing encouragement to this, at the end of the year I was just SO jammed up with stuff, I didn't have time for anything other than work and the band I play with. It is surprising how much discretionary time you find when you don't have to go to work every day. But that merry-go-round actually starts again tomorrow...I am the district IT guy...so I am on call for projects, help, and problems all year long...more or less.

Doesn't that look neat? It came from PaintScratch.com. Like I've said before...it is not exactly cheap...but when you live in the middle of nowhere like I do, you take what you can get. I am pretty sure that most "real towns" have places that can custom mix acrylic lacquer in rattle cans. Interestingly enough, the can of 56 Buick Tahiti Coral came with the SAME EXACT SPRAY NOZZLES that you get with a can of ReRanch. Don't know what that means...but it IS a data point. I have yet to hit it with DEFT. The Paint Scratch people assured me there would be no trouble...and they haven't lied to me...yet. Cheers Steve Dikkers aka Buckocaster51

Nice color. Looks like it's close to the color I used on this Mini-Strat. This is American Tradition brand "Garden Bloom" available from Lowes.
......Coral Mini-Strat.JPG Wow.............. I just checked out paintscratch.com. You were right about it not being exactly cheap............ and I thought ReRanch was high priced .......... it is a nice color though.

Four coats of Imron have been brushed on.
This is "before" ![]() This is "after" ![]() Feels good to be making some progress. I'm going to hit the high points with some 220 and razor off some drips and runs later on. Another four coats might maybe oughtta almost sort of get close, perhaps.

I think if there is going to be another sparklecaster it should be put through a weight reduction program (ie: rout the sucker out!!!).
It's looking great Mr. O'caster. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with this weekend. Bob

i haven't commented on this whole thread before because i wanted to wait until it was finished. by the way, bucko, it is AWESOME, but your question about the pink was funny.
he means melon like a watermelon, not the round kind that are orange in the middle and you eat with a spoon for breakfast. :) |

Slowly but surely...
one coat of stinky, sticky Imron at a time... ![]() it IS leveling out!

New Stuff!
New Stuff! This Imron is neat. It is going to cover the "flake" well. But it takes forever to dry. If I put it on in the "workshop", dust is a real problem. I can't work on anything else... So I came up with this solution. A trip down to the Dollar General store, where suprisingly, not everything costs a dollar, but that is another story, yielded this fine "sweater box." ![]() A couple of plastic cups will provide the necessary support. Look what fits in handily! ![]() I can apply the "goop"... ![]() seal it up...and get on with other work. Groovy! The bad news is...I am just learning this Imron stuff. You know, it is not really designed to be applied with a brush. I've got some real uglies on the bottom by the strap pin. Lots of Imron ran over the top and bottom after I applied a real heavy coat last week. Big drips. Now that is not a problem...I could sand them flat...or even razor blade them off. EXCEPT the goop also trapped some air bubbles. Real small air bubbles. Looks sort of like foam. After I get the top and back done, I might just take the oscillating drum sander to the sides, take them down to wood, and flake them again. I'm thinking that might be the path of least resistance. It just doesn't pay to be in a hurry. I was. I glopped it on too thick, too fast. My bad.

Maybe...but it can't be by much. Imron is a two-part wonder of modern chemistry. Once they are mixed together, I think it would harden/dry underwater.
After several hours it is hard enough that dust that lands on it won't stick.
