oh...
thats.... interesting....

Are you settled on this sparkly sprinkly stuff? You could get some that is not so thick (you know, like the ones we used in school....).

Either way, i think its a great project!
In the end it will most certainly be really great...

Just brushed off the "touch up" sprinkling of the sparkleflakes...

Kids, this is getting to close to something that I can live with.

It looks like there are some issues near the edges. Should be able to touch that up with no problem.

It is gosh awfully thick though.

Or did I mention that already?

This is going to be a looooooong process...

Hey buck! Looks much better than my test piece, I didn't put down a base color. Going to buy some purple tomorrow. Are you gonna go another round of pixie dust? Or are you at a point where the grinch has sparkles in his eyes?

It looks like the base color/base coat is important. I think the "real people" use some sort of candy or metallic base. That would give things much more "pop."

Will probably try to get some more pixie sparkleflakedust on the edges tomorrow.

Then, if I am happy, I'll attack the body!

Sparkle in his eye or not, the GRINCH is happy!

It looks a lot better in the last pictures.

In the first one, it looked a bit like a bithday cake...

All that was missing is 6 candles.

Can't wait to see the work on the whole body.

How about using smaller/finer sparkles? Then apply clear pore filler, bondo or something similar?

Haha... I swear I saw 70's tele one time that was "chain smokers brown". It actually looked pretty cool, but under the gaurd it was white.

The pigments that my wife ordered arrived today, and after seeing your project, it inspired me for a project of mine...

Here is a link to their tips on how to use their products. Maybe it can help you with yours.

http://www.luminarteinc.com/primary-...ts-how-to.html

Their pigments are a lot smaller, but they mix them with the clear to apply them. I don't know if this method can be used with bigger pearls though.

Once again thanks for the ideas and kind words.

Today I thought it would be good to "cover my six" and take the work in progress to Bob the Painter and see what he thought about it.

Bob scratched his head, hid a smile, made a coughing sound that sounded surprisingly like "loser"...

...then I reminded him that, by golly, next year his son would be in my class...

and Bob said, "Sure, we can cover that!"

I have the go-ahead on the entire body!

Then he said, "I'll bet that stuff really pops in the sunlight."

I happened to have the camera...

It sure does.

Time for supper...then some DEFT fumes...and the pixie dust!

Here in California, Watermelons are Red. That is definately pink, at least on my monitor. It looks more like a cupcake or gumdrop. But very interesting. I like sparkly guitars.

You mean bad in a GOOD way, right?

Just a few minutes ago I grabbed my daughter's pink Mustang off the wall and restrung it, did a few adjustments, and played it for the first time in about 6 months....wow, I'm kinda "in like" with it again....it's no Tele, but it's a rockin' PINK gee-tar. I know yours is gonna be a head turner!

This is 9 different kinds of cool. Can you go a little more in depth about the application?
How wet is the wet coat?
Section at a time for the body?
Just sprinkle the glitter on? Or brush? I was thinking of filling up a strainer I have that has small rectangular holes for a more even application, but your method is looking fantastic.

Thanks Buck. great great stuff.

Thanks again kids!

How wet? Imagine that you are spraying paint. A moth or squeeter comes along an lands in the wet paint and gets sucked right in. That's the kind of wet I am talking about. One pixiesparkleflake dropped into the lacquer would sink in and be totally wet.

I did the headstock all at once. The body in sections about the size of the headstock.

When it is dry I am taking a bristle paint brush to it and trying to brush it all off. Only the stuff that is stuck the best stays behind.

I've gone back to some "bare" spots, sprayed more DEFT, and sprinkled more pixie dust and it SEEMS to work.

The pixiesparkleflakedust comes in what MUST be a spice container. There is a little twist section of the cap that exposes 3 or 4 holes. I am just shaking it LIGHTLY out of that. I would think a strainer would work well.

Nice job... doesn't look pink as before.

The sparkles changed the look completely.

After 40 cans of Deft, Buckocaster had achieved enough nitro buildup to begin wetsanding....

You know, I'd think about getting a big can of that brush on Deft and build it up with that. Its gonna look cool when its all done!

Bob the Painter is sure we can level it pretty easily with some sort of miracle two-part clear that he has used...but that might be a lot like cheating. I think I might try brush on DEFT before I haul it up there...it would be nice to do this all by my lonesome with "old school" methods.

If you know what I mean.

Since I got by fancy-schamcy respirator, it doesn't bother me to be around lacquer at all. I wish I had purchased one of those YEARS ago. Kids, make sure that you don't make the same mistakes a lot of us fossils have made. WEAR THE RESPIRATORS!

You're right about the respirators... I bought one this week when I decided to shoot llacquer. I should have bought one right at the first build.

I think a five gallon pail of DEFT and just dip it.

That would work for sure.

Bob the Painter DID mention something similar to a five gallon pail of DEFT.

Nothing like that here in the "city," but I did buy a quart can of brush-on glossy DEFT today. We'll see how that works as soon as I get everything covered with pixie dust.

I don't have a tripod here right now, nor am am really keen on spraying real close to the camera, so we don't have any "action" pictures to show.

Best we can do are lots of these "in progress" photos.

Just touched up the back and did most of one side.

So far it seems to be pretty much not too shabby even. I'm not getting full coverage out to the edges and not worrying about it. We plan on painting on some faux binding. There is simply no way that I could imagine scraping through this finish down to real bindings. Not saying it couldn't be done, but this cowboy isn't going to ride that horse!

I spray a glop of DEFT on a small area, and then sprinkle the purplepinkpixiesparkledust on. I did this area with my fingers after sweeping up a small pile of spillage and brush-off.

It looks REALLY thick on the heel by the cutaway, and it is. But most of that will be brushed off. Only the stuff that sticks the best, the stuff that is actually buried in the lacquer, is staying behind.

The thought just crossed my mind that AFTER I get this all covered and slathered over with layer and layer of clear. I ABSOLUTELY do not want to sand through this stuff.

Nosireebob! That would be BAD!

Nice Goin' Bucko's back... I knew you could doit....

Know what?? In over 60 years, I've had my face in a lotta mellons down here... I have never seen a Lavender one.... wonder how they taste...

I just hate to think of all the clear coating it's gonna take.... and she's as sparkly as a Wal-Mart Christmas tree.
