WHat to do with this piece of mahogany?
I was looking around at Macbeath hardwood today and some how came home with this piece of wood. I'm not sure how it happened. That said I'd rather not dwell on the past, instead I'd like to live in the moment. What to do with it?
It's 1.5" by 14" by 32". It's a little rough. I figure this could be the back and and I can add a 0.25" cap of something. It doesn't seem big enough to get two bodies out of it. But it just fits this Moderne template, it the grain runs on a diagonal. Not sure but it might fit an explorer. |

If I'm reading my template correctly, a Tele body is 12.75 by 15.96. If you flipped your template over so that the lower cutaway is against the upper bout of the other Tele, you could get 2 Teles. You'd be looking at the front of one and the back of the other.

FWIW, a Moderne has been on my "to do" list for a long time. I keep envisioning one with a "Vee" headstock and two P90s, but that's how I roll

don't rule out two different body shapes. if you get creative with template placement, you just might be able to mix and match between the Tele, Strat and Jr.

I would do my own design. Back in the seventies Macbeath hardwood in Bazerkly had a dedicated section for guitar woods. I haven't been there in years how the wood selection now?

Is that a fissure in it or small cracks in the one close up picture? We call it wind shake in the millwork business and hate to say but it looks terrible after finishing even on a guitar back. It is fairly common in African Mahogany.

Nice piece of wood. Is this HW store worth making the drive from Sacramento?
Sorry I don't have an opinion regarding what to do, wait actually I do. Go back, get more wood, build them all

I'm in San Francisco. I haven't been to the MacBeath in Berkley. I should drive over and take a look. The selection in SF seemed pretty good. in the main office they have a bunch of scrap pieces in a bin and a lot of exotic and figured boards. In the back they have a huge warehouse. Looked like a pretty good selection.

Seems the prices on the web site look higher than what I see on the price schedule I took home. Of course I'm an amateur at the lumber business so I may not be reading the web site correctly. |
