I used red oak down the center for two reasons. 1- the bridge screws stay tight and 2- hopefully less tear out when I rout the neck pocket. You guys think a rear rout on this is better or standard control plate?

If you use the dark inlays, I'd probably do a rear rout so that it's less disruptive to the pattern. Personally, I'd have no trouble putting a control plate on there without the inlays, but not with them.
I know that makes no sense, but it's all aesthetic. Are you doing an ashtray bridge or a modern? Given the way the poplar mixes with the oak, I think the control plate would look better with a modern bridge, but YMMV.

I decided to do an ashtray bridge with the normal control plate and ordered a vintage skunk stripe neck to keep the theme. I also decided to keep it simple and use automotive thin pinstripe to accent the center strip. This is only my first build and had to learn a lesson when i had a tear out when routing for the neck. But I'm learning.
