beginning a beautiful friendship
I have a crap tele knockoff that I can't intonate, another thread, and a largish sum of 4/4 cherry boards. I was thinking.
1 crap Tele that has a good neck and sounds nice plus 1 largish stash of cherry boards...... front  back  each of these is 3/4" and need to be joined. I may go with the 1 1/2" as final thickness or I may add in a 1/4" between them. Need to measure the switch on my crap guitar. Plan is to go traditional as I already have a tort pick guard to use. Only part I need to buy is a control plate but may make that out of a scrap of walnut I have. |

Nice looking guitar idea you have there! The color is really cool.
You're right about the switch and body thickness issue, I have one of those switches here and I think it's almost 1 7/16" tall. You could try a switch for a Les Paul instead and see if that works. |

Cherry is good stuff.
 The finish on this one is Watco "Cherry" Danish Oil (I guess they squeeze it out of Cherry Danishes) as a stain, with Tru-Oil sprayed on as a clear coat. The Danish Oil has a little pigment in it that ads to what is already in the wood, rather than making it look dyed. Cherry is one of my favorite woods to work with. Its so closed grained and smooth. I've done a few 1-1/2" thickness guitars. Use this style switch and you should be alright. You can get them from "Bezdez" on E-bay for cheap:  If you're mounting it in a traditional control plate that sits on top of the cavity, you're good. I've even done a rear routed cavity and mounted it thru the top wood, and still had room. This guitar is 1.5" thick

wow, thanks, I believe I shall go with the 1.5" then. as far as a control plate I think I'll do one out of cherry too just to match up with the pick guard, although I do like the no PG idea too to show off the cherry.

I think most TDPRI builders in the US get their parts from Bezdez too. Even with the shipping from Canada, his prices are better than the US vendors that carry the same parts.

got a bit of work done on the body this morning, the new Rigid ROSS is an amazing tool. I'm not even gonna bother routing with the template, the sander can easily take the body to the lines with only hand sanding to finish.
The grain in the cherry is surprising considering I just grabbed a couple boards from the pile. The dark stripe shows more even when wetted with naphtha, this was pretty much dry. I staggered the seams from the back half to the front half by about an inch to add a bit of strength.

a while ago I aquired a bundle of 12X12 walnut veneer pieces, probably 100 at least. I've had them for years and think they will make a great control panel if I can get them glued up nicely. They are in the clamps now drying. We will see.
 I may have to stiffen it with epoxy but I'll find out once the glue dries. |

OK, changed my mind. I don't want to use the pick guard, it would be a shame to cover up the cherry.
To do a rear route how much wood needs to be left on the top for switch and pot mounting? I may still do a faux tele control panel with the walnut but it would be inlay'd into the front. Might be beyond my skills so will have to practice on some scrap first. |

options time, threw together a control plate of walnut, what do you think? Go with it or just plain rear rout mounting? I have no intention of doing a front rout as I don't think the walnut plate would be durable enough to hold the pots and switch. It would be surface mounted bbut rear routed cavity.
Opinions appreciated.
