8 piece blank???
i have 8 pieces of mahogony i have left over from other projects, together if glued they would be a perfect size for a body blank,
is this worth doing? will all the gluing be too much? would it be too weak? and if so would 1 piece top strengthen it? Thoughts please. it may be a way i could use up all my scraps |

I have seen many casters in here with more pieces than that.
Also my very first guitar is glued from 7 pieces of mahogany. I builded that (body only) as a youngster some twenty yers ago, and It`s still holds and sound very good. If you get them glued up properly, I think it will be just fine:) Good luck with your build :) |

It'll be strong enough if you use a good adhesive. The bond is generally stronger than the parent material. Have a look at the "yardstick" build from this years Challenge or the "popsickle caster". I had these bits leftover after making a window. Now I have to finish the guitar after building the house the window went into.

It can be a great way to use up the precious scraps of wood. My Harlequaster is 73 individual pieces, plus Rosewood/Maple/Rosewood stringers between each piece. I think it's over 300 piece top; too many for me to count!

My pickup test body in the " let's make a pickup" thread is about 12 pieces of pine and it is hollowed out for pickups all the way through. My 2009 challenge guitar was too. No problems.. I make sure I use a scraper on the glue faces to get rid of any raised knife marks that may impact a good bond. Use a good yellow glue too.

My '91 American Standard Tele has 7 pieces with lam top and back. So does my '95 American Standard Strat. I think all of the earlier, ['87-2000???], had this confiruration.

I love the checkerboard idea. I did consider a tartan top (I'm originally from Glasgow, Scotland) but wanted to avoid gluing end-grains together. Just to be safe, I epoxy-glued the joined harlequin mash-up to a stiff maple veneer, running across the grain. The top is only 6mm thick and I wanted some reinforcement over the hollowed body. Looking forward to your build. Have fun!
