FOG!

When I put on a dust mask, my glasses and/or safety specs fog up, and then I can't see what the heck I'm doing. What do you guys do about that?

Try something like this shield:

Works for me.

When that happens to me, it's because my exhaled breath is coming out the top of the mask, which means that I'm not getting a good seal on the mask.

3m makes some anti fog stuff. We use it on surgical masks in the OR at work.

I bought some fancy dust masks that have thick contoured foam across the bridge of the nose; they're supposed to seal and cut "99%" of the fogging. We'll see if they work today.

@Yukon--this is stuff they put on the masks?? Or on the goggles?

Just go to a local motorcycle shop and ask for their best anti fog stuff. Works amazing

I use what we call a 'mono-goggle' here. It has soft edges to seal better against the face and elastic strap. Just can't think what else they're called? Just goggles, I suppose, but not the hard framed poly carb with legs type.

use the masks with the vent in the front or a respirator

Seems like overkill for just keeping sawdust out of my nose. . . .

I tried out these disposable masks with the foam at the bridge; my nose must not be the same shape as a Japanese person's, because I'd say it was much less than 99% effective.

I think what he meant are the disposable masks that have a vent on the front. That is what I use and I don't get fogging. They are like $3 each or something, so not as cheap as the straight paper masks, but the work much better in every sense.

Ditto,
That's what I use and I only have trouble if I put on a new one and forget to adjust the metal part so it fits the bridge of my nose.

Sorry I missed the latest replies! I've never seen those vented disposables yet in Japan. I've tried a bunch of different kinds--the pleated surgical-type, the formed/molded ones, etc. Even with the metal strips pinched tight, I get blowback. Today I tried a trick that worked quite well, though: just a teeny bit of dishwasher liquid smeared on the inside of the goggles. I remembered that the stuff I used for my diving mask back in the old days was just some diluted detergent. Can't get any cheaper than that! :-)
