Well it looks like you've given me a reason to make a seafoam green snakehead myself. Now if I could only get decent at spraying so I wouldn't have to order twice as much from ReRanch (hope to get a spray gun in the next few months) to get an ok result...

Thanks, Dave, regarding the router table. I can work with your description, and adapt it to fit my needs.

When I saw you using your workmate to clamp those boards together I got all excited to try that myself--then I found out today that my Japanese version isn't quite big enough to do that. Good thing I didn't have the glue on already.

Now I gotta buy some more clamps....

I can't imagine that if they copied a WM it wouldn't work. Do you have the clamping cauls for it? Or does it have any?

It's not an exact copy; it's Japan-sized. I have the bench dogs, but when the leaves are wide open, the two blanks I want to glue together are still hanging over the edges. But I'll use that trick the next time I have something smaller to glue.

Your router sled has inspired me, too! Gonna put one of those together today.

I'm baaacck! And boy have I missed a lot

Man, go to work for a few days and you miss a lot around here
With my new sched I'm up at 4:30am (eastern) with the dawn patrol

Oh well, I've been doing a little each evening and this is the result

Got my body planed down (did find out I should have put stops on each end, nicked the pipes ), this is the front side

Doing the back

The top (which will be covered)

And the back, which will not be covered

The body, ready to profile sand

Here is the spalted maple top being glued up. Out of the two I have, this is the least interesting. The top is going to be very "busy" anyway, and would take away from the fine pattern. This one isn't chopped liver however

BTW, the orangish smearing is from the shellac I wiped on the endgrain to prevent splitting. It won't be there soon

Now................I've got some threads to catch up on!

Dave

I like that cedar, Dave, and also the attachments you got
for your WorkMate. I have a small router table top for
mine, too. I was thinking I'd also like to make an attachment
to hold a body vertical to the ground, if you know what I
mean. It would just be a couple of pieces of MDF, carpet
or some other padding on one side of each piece, and
an extra little gizmo to hold each piece to one side of
the WorkMate. I don't think I'm explaining this well.

Yeh, perpendicular to the ground. I got it

Mmmm, chopped liver!

That (not to be covered) back is pretty.

As of today, there's a new tradition to finish snakeheads within a week. Better get a move on, eh?

It's looking good Dave. Are you going to leave it a natural finish? Is that aromatic cedar? Must smell nice.

I can smell that cedar all the way up here , that combo of spalted maple top/cedar body is going to look great , the sides will be a nice contrast , what are your finish plans Dave ?

Aromatic? Yeppers, between my room (where I store it), the back porch and the workshop room, it's like one bloody great potporrui bowl As for the finish, that follows

Well, until I cut it out, the plan was for Tru-oil except for the fretboard, but the body is quite dry and a little chippy (by ring count, it's well over 50 yrs old and had been air drying over 5.I have one small tearout to fix already ). I'm sticking with dye & tru-oil for the top, but have decided to do gym floor poly applied butcher-block method (hard, glossy, and takes about a week to cure, but doesn't require brushing or spraying )
The neck with be tru-oil (possibly tinted) and lemon oil on the fretboard. I can't wait until you see the fretboard, I haven't gotten Indian rosewood that dark in 20yrs

P.S. Herb, sometime after the build challenge I'll do my Musicmaster, but the first thing up, will be what I'm using one of those cedar tops on (I think you'll like it )

I like the cedar body... looks great. My parents always kept keepsakes in a cedar chest, I guess those are not as popular as they used to be. I have been thinking about a build from cedar or redwood.

Looks great. I wonder if you leave the cavities unsealed whether the aroma will keep coming out for a while. I made a cedar chest and did the outside in lacquer and left the inside unfinished. It still smells great 30 years later.

My Dad still builds cedar chests..............it's an old family tradition, at least until I came along . I wish there was a way I could hook folks up with this place,MZ Enterprises. They're only 8 miles from house, but they don't mill, and they don't ship. They have loads of that cedar, and black walnut in particular. That board was 10" long, 8/4 (actually slightly thicker), I bought it for 11$

Thanks! That was the plan, and as I'll keep it in a gig bag, it'll probably smell sweet for years

That sounds like a great plan for finishing. I had planned to make mine with a really pretty bookmatched redwood top. But for the time constraints I wanted to use Tru-Oil. I tried it on the redwood and it got VERY dark - sucked it up like a sponge! Changed to a walnut top. I think the gym floor poly on the cedar is a great idea.
